Burdens - How Born?
-How Borne?
Galatians, chapter 6, and
Psalm 55; hold wealthy words
' . concerning the burdens of life - '
• the'burdens of wills,'the burdens
or weights and the burdens of
wings. These burdens, have their
birth in the fact that life is a
,,,solo, life is a chorus and life is•a
controversy. -
1. Life is a Solo. "For every
man shall bear his own burden"
(Gal 6:5). There is a sense in
which our lives are isolated,
insulated and separated from
every • other life. We arrive on
this terrestrial ball alone. When
the hour strikes, we move
through the exit alone. Between
birth and death, the cradle and
the grave, in such a large way,
we live alone: There are some
privileges for us only. There are
certain responsibilities only for
us. Truly life is so lonely, oft
painfully so it is lived on the
level of the soloist. There is a
program for you ;''no other van*
follow it. "This is my task!" is
more than the mere words of a
song. It is pungently real.
Jacob was Left alone (Gen.
32:24). He had to deal with
many other folk, but when it
came to the great crisis of his
life, other helpers fail, and he
stands alone. His own heart is
• the hinge upon which will swing
the door to victory or defeat.
Humbled and chastened, Jacob's
heart opens the door to a new
fellowship and power.
It is so easy to lose 'ourselves
in the crowd, we hide behind
others, behind.organizations, but
'Vie cannot hide from the eyes of
Him with Who'in we -have to`do.
'There is a burden, a personal
responsibility, which cannot,' be
transferred. We must will to bear
it. None other can so will.
, 2. Life is a Chorus. "Bear ye'
one another's burden and so
fulfill the law of Christ" (Gal.
• 6:2).
"We share our" mutual woes
- NT mutual.burdens_kear."'
• There is not one of us whose
life • concerns himself alone,
Really , we are only part of
• ourselves; others are the rest of
us. There. are burdens (weights)
too heavy for us. We may share
Others' burdens but not their
responsibilities. These burdens
are often unnecessary, but they
are, heavy. Then, too, they are
not all of our own choosing.
Others thrust them upon us.
this form of . burden -bearing!
"Ye who are spiritual" is a1act
to be noted not religious, not
self-righteous, not
compromising. It was Gladstone
who said, "One example is
•worth a thotksand „arguments".
A Sunday -school teacher met
one of the boys of her class. By
his actions, she first believed he
was mischief bent. The boy
holding a fragment of a mirror in
a position towards the sun so as
to reflect the light, was focusing
the light into the upper window
of, house across the street. The
.teacher reprimanded the boy.
Then from his lips she' learned
the truth. Said he, "My little
brother is very ill in that upper
room . yonder. He is lonely.
There's not much light in that
room. And so I am trying to
throw as much light as I possibly
can into ' his ° room". What a
lesson for you and me!
3. Life is a Controversy. The
Psalmist voices the struggle -
"Oh • that I had the wings of a
dove, then would I fly away and
be at ' rest". (Psalm 55:6).
But we do not get rid,of burdens
that way, by flight. A hawk
might so behave, but not a dove:
We do not leave our most -
grievous burdens behind us; we
carry them with us. Verse 22
tells the more successful way --
"Cast thy burdens upon the
Lord and He will sustain thee".
When, God gives wings either the
burden flees, -or the weight of it
is eased. And there are burdens
which others cannot bear for us
or with -us. Only God can bear
"such! Oft upon our knees we:
catch,,a clearer• vision and our
vexations are stilled, our
perplexities cleared: And what
happens to the burden of guilt?
`.`At the Cross, at the Cross,
where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart
rolled away; • °
It was there by faith I
received my sight,
And now I am happy all
- .the dayr_" ._ __ -
• "He" shall sustain thee".
There may be• a blessing -
bigger and better than the
removal of the burden. God
deals with persons, rather
than with burden's. God does
not fit the burden to the
back; but the back to the
04burden.
Sc• ripture interprets Scripture.
The preceding verse, (GaL. 6:1)
sheds a light upon our way -. "If
any man be overtaken in a fault" '
- help hint! -Do not criticize
him, do not denounce hith, do
not throw ston at him, do not
about him; but
