T. Warrener Made First Pair
Here from Heavy •
Saw Blade
Mr. Thomas Warrener has the
distinction of beingthe first man-
in
an-in Goderich to make a pair of
hockey skates.
In the fall of the year 1895
his .. brother-in-law, Angus
Mclvor, ` brother of ' Mrs.
Warrener, came from Winnipeg
to spepd the winter here:, He
noticed that the' boys were
playing ',`!shinny" -they had
'never heard ,of hockey. So Mr.
McIvor got a group of boys
together and taught them how
to play hockey. as it was -played
'in, Winnipeg. He had quite a
good team, the boys being very ,
much interested in the sport.
Mr. McIvor having left his
' Skates in Winnipeg, Mr. Warrener
was prevailed upon to make a
pair for him. At that time Mr.
Warrener had a' blacksmith shop

Gower's shop is now' located.
Mr. McIvor having explained
what 'he wanted, Mr. Warrener
made the runners out of a hearty

saw blade and then sharpened
thein. They were made to screw
on the shoes.
Shinny was, played without
skates with a stick that had a
knob at, the ` end, `somewhat
resembling a golfstick, or with
any kind of stick that came
handy. Instead of a' rubber puck
a stone :was used and --the• boys
would yell, "shinny on' your
own side.” Mr. Warrener "recalls
playing on the Maitland River in,
Hullett and he says it was a very
rough game.
