Broome. They were in Mrs. Fisher's class and Mr. Schade's class, Miss Hewitt and Mr. Broome were in • 4• Mrs. Fisher's class. Miss Qke and Miss Cullen were in Mr. Schade's class. We were pleased to have - them visit 'our school. Library Van The Huron County Library Van came to our school last Thursday and left us lots of Aew books to read. New Students New ,pupils in our school are: Carsten and Cameron Stevenson, Joanne, Rocky and Lonny Wells, Annetta Carrick, Jay Tofflemire, and Bruce, Russell, . Pattie, Bob,. and Debbie McCreight: •' By Barbara Shelton and Faye Leafloer TOPICAL DISPLAYSc.. • Miss Videan's class made a _ •display of , hildren skating, toboganning, naking snowmen, and having lots and lotslof fun. Miss Milton's class, made a display on mining. trThey' used several differentkinds:•o'drock — iron, agate, and quartz, and had signs printed in red and blue_ - Mr. Carroll's class made a display of the moon. They used . jets, rockets, and ' a moon crawler. They" also had two astronauts hanging from a.string. • Laura Morrison Room 1 made- a display on "smoking. They named it "Is -This Yo'u?" They drew pictures of , dragons and each picture hada title. The first one was called "The }fulness, Puffless Dragon." The second was called "I Can't " Run Any More,, They then wrote a letter to Ness' 'Dixon, our health' .nurse. This is a copy- of the letter: "De iss Dixon: T�k you for the film. I'm not going tp.smoke. - Grade 1." Room 19 made a display -on ,hells. They named it "Animals and Shells from the Ocean." At the front, of the table they wrote a little story about two or three of the sea shells. Some of the naives of - the shells: starfish; seahorse, lobster. Room, 10, Mrs. Kane's class, made a display of "college" .. people-- ruder-pietures-sof Hippies, Clowns, Baseball Players, Evening Gals, Tramps, and Mexicans. APOLOGY Apologies are extended to "MICHAEL ANDREWS" for the error in ~naming Mike Armstrong as the 3rd prize winner in the Squirt essay contest'' st A Breath Taking Moment Oh -it Was breath taking when I lifted my present from under the Christmas' tree. It was large and 'heavy. I set it on the flo ►r and statted opening it. I ripped off the paper and then the next side. It was so large that Mom didn't -have enough paper for the whole thing. When I finished unwrapping it, I saw a Knit -O -Matic. I was so happy I didn't think of opening the rest of mygifts. 1 was a very happy girl. We are starting a new year. We are glad toget back to school after our long holiday. At least most of us are. This ' week we examined ,i a soapstone brought by a pupil. The pupils were surprised; to find that the stone floated." When it was pushed down into•the 'water, it carne right up again. The dangers of smoking are: lung diseases, heart diseases and nerve diseases. Last- week' ',there ' was an Anti -Smoking Campaign. On `Tuesday we watched a teIeVisaon program on -smoking. -The speakers. were Dr. Evans, Dr. Wood and 'Dr. Penistan. . The only cure for smoking is "Don't start!" Once you. have . started smoking, you can't stop. In this period a student can take part in any of the subjects offered. This includes things like typing, 'woodworking, french. glee club, recorder and outdoor - science. The student who Is lackingin certain • subjects can take remedial claSses,(usuidly math or reading). These Clasee, are taught by- our teachers and in one. class (recorder to be specific) a talented young man by the name not Ernie Pfrimmer teaches. Rtiasc Speakers Thisyear to correspond with the Electief System and its ideas, a - very talented and well-known man of our area, Mr. McLaren will ccilaw to our school to talk with _the pupils of the senior wing. During his first visit, he talked with us about his newspaper -clipping filing system. Mr. McLaren also answered questions about kis career and about himself. In his futui visits which will fall . on the third ' Thursday of each month, Mr. McLaren plans to talk about t e following: "Painting the Around U s", . "Colour in Art", Theatre , .;, ,Art Feints", "-Advertising 'Art" and "Importance of Local History". In Science we have been learning about musical instruments and sounds. The children have ° been bringing some instruments. So far, we have an accordion, a tamberine, - a _ ,,xylophone, two mouth organs, a drum, a guitar, a set of • bells — two, horns, a triangle and ' two Bards. In social studies, we have been learning about .'Sebastian Cabot and in language, we have been writing poems like THE LOVELY ISTAA The"stars out for all to see, One littleistar twinkled at me. A white road seemed the milky way, Until at last it became day,. • MISS NORMAN'S GRADE 1 This week , our class made popcorn together. Then we discussed what the popcorn was hke..using ourfive senses. These are the ideas that Grade I came up with. POPCORN Looks -white and brown, -like a melted snowman -like a white rose -lumpy -like ' curls with spots on them. Smells -yummy -like it is cooked -like yummy wheat -delicious -like popcorn Feels -bumpy -soft -crumply -like a marshmallow rolling around in your hand -fluffy Tastes • .scrumptious -crunchy • -delicious -like popcorn -yummy Sounds -poppy -like someone 'is smashing -- dishes -like stones hitting the barn -like a gun going off -like someone dropped • a stones ,Afterwards we, made popcorn for everyone to eat. Nine boys from Grade 7 and nine boys from Grade 8 form the team which in the future plans to play a team ftom another school. Thanks to patience of Mr. Harman these teams have been a great success. 'BASKETBALL This year �, Colborne's • basketball tryouts started a little late 'and—as -a-result we have a game before a team. However, we plan to play a game with the G.D.C.I. Midgets as soon as • Mr. Harman picks•10 boys out of the 15 prospects. On Tuesday, January 7, the weather became ;so bad that school was -dismissed at 1 p.m. 'On Thursday, January • 9, classes again ',were cancelled at 2,•.30 p.m. becauseof the weather.
