Firs — I want to apologize to
my good friends in Colborne for
creating a misunderstanding
regarding Carlow Hall. Last week
1 was speaking about the great
planthe ladies have for making
more room for their activities ;-
and then 'I switched to our own -
arena auditorium and got
fouled up! A paragraph
regarding a 'sign plisted in
Godetich arena which wants the
parents to bring their children to
the, hockey games - but "please
keep them under control while
in the .auditorium'-''. • Somehow
we had the whole thing :running
together and the Colborne ladies
thought I meant their Hall — and
it surely sounded like it — and
I'm sorry. .
I happen to„know,the ladies in
that area are encouraged to bring
theil- children — and welcome —
to any .of their meetings. So,
ladies of Colborne it was a big
boo-boo and I hope 1 haven't
disrupted anything!
Many of you have now seen
the building at the corner of
West . Street and. The Square
being demolished. For those of
you who have been snowbound
— there are great doors lined up
along West Street, which rather
startle you as you approach The
Square. I was so busy looking at 4
all the different sizes and shapes
and ckgours of those forlorn
doors. — just standing there —
seemed' ' as tho'' they were
holding handsnot wanting me
40 Took up at the great holes that
were once windows in the; dark
building behind them, .and some
character in front of me stopped
— as he should — and I nearly
plowed into him!
Doors have always held a
fascination for me. I've ^ always
felt they were friendly -and -were
all sizes and shapes-- just -like
people! And, I'd like to bet they
could tell some DANDY stories
— aren't you glad they can't,
• talk?
age---. full of vim and vigor and
great ideas pushing ,the
oldsters — trying to make them
hurry a 44t7 We had respect for
our elders, but, they were still
trying to make us do things —
just as 'they "used oto".. .
Thank God some of . us
managed ,to push past them and
go beyond their doubts and, fears
of the future — just as we — a
great you — should now
say, "Go ahead and do it if you
have a better way' 4 . everything
has changed and so should we -
go to it kids •— and I'll help!"
It is pretty hard to • change
your way of thinking,"your way
of doing things, ' but -you can
TRY!
Many, years' ago people were
weaving to . make materials for
our clothing, rugs for our floors,
covers for'our beds, draperies for
, our ' windows: Those old hand
looms were hard on the back
and arms, but they were needed
for our way of life. I think that
one day hubby had ,to do ., the
weaving and that did it! He.sat
dawn and invented a machine
that could do it better and
faster. Now look • at the
wonderful' things we have
we're really spoiled! .
a 'But, it is a new .way of life -
and weaving is now done for
Tpleasure a hobby. You
wouldn't dare walk on_ some of
the "rags" that they make now
by hand — they are hung on. the
wall mr in a place of honour. It is
now an ,- Art ' — you create
different. designs antextures —
and you are. ,road of your
handiwork. p ,.
Times have changed — you
don't -HAVE to cut up, all those
old materials because you need a
rug, you do it because you must
CREATE something with your
own hands, you have a real need
to do SOMETHING — almost
anything — because these days it
is very easy to get bored to
•_death.
We 'have too much time on
our hands. We need things to do
-to fill our ''Leisure Time".
You'll notice some people just
can't or won't try to do
anything useful, after theyretire,
all they want to do is Salk. The
more, they "just TACK", the
more- bitter and miserable they
become, they can't 'get away
from the past and they are afraid
of the filture. , $o, Q -o, ,they ,try to
drag people down' to their. old
world and if they can't get their
way, they ;talk, talk, talk, and
try to undermine, everything the
younger people are trying to do!
These TALKERS are a menace.
They are, so obvious With their
being `A G) N' everything that
they' are to be pitied.
Don't ask me what we can do
with them — or for them. If they
can't.see-beyond the end of their
noses, can't see the:, " overall
picture, then, they are beyond
their usefulness to you or me or
their community. -
. Just b&thankful there are not
too many of them andiet's say a
little prayer that WEdon't slip
back to "the way we used to do
things",, let us carry on and try
to ke a real \\Lp\lalle
hope\we have the'
face it.
• It= was nice to see Howie
Kuenzie in our paper last week'
and THERE is a boy who is

Every. year — for some' years
i.
I recall the C.P.X. being in the
• West,. Street cornea, of that
building and Craigier Insurance
Agency beside it and the C.N.X.
office on the other side. Just like
Simpsons and Eatons . side by
side! Anyhow, Craigies and C.P.
moved out and Guy Emerson
d1° picked ^up his drugs- and `stuff'
and moverin. Guys' had been
where Mac Campbell now has his
store. That was 'about 1951 or
'52. Then the C.N. decided to
move, their office to that quaint
old station at the end of East
Street and Reg Bell, that well
loved jeweller for 12 years on
East Street, moved in. That was
about - 1957 and he stayed there
untilihe retired in '65 when Mr.
Bricker took over.
-don't don't know - how Mr.
Bricker's ,nerves are but I don't
think I could stand to have a
building pulled down aroundrmy
ears! Good ,luck, and `business as -
usual!. And so "The (Square'''
changes. -'•The old makesway for

With science making so many
