Our readers have no doubt noticed
that in the majority of houses struck
by lightning the chimney seems to be
the point of attack, the electric fluid
gaining admission to the premises by
this means. A scientific paper says
this danger ean be avoided or at least
lessened, by capping the chimneys not
in use with ordinary tin -caps, thus
shutting' off the draft. The same theo
ry.will apply to closiPg doors and win-
dows during the progress of a thunder
storm.
The publishers:of the Essex Free
Press have been troubled, as are many
other newspaper publishers, by sub-
scribers endeavoring to avoid payment
ot subscription fees A report of the
Division Court preceedings held last
week at Essex eentains the following:
Essex Free Press vs. T. B. White. • The
plaintiffs are publishers of the Essex
Free Press a newspaper published at
Essex. The defendant Thomas B.
White, a wealthy quarry -man of An-
derson. The action was on a subscript
ien account. The plantiffs brought the
action to test the law in regard, to a
contention sometimes made. where a
newspaper has been transferred thati
the paper was not ,specially, ordered
from the new proprietors, but was sine
ply continued without authority. The
defendent set up the contention that
though he had ordered it from the for
mer proprietor, he had not from the
present ones. The learned judge, held
that his accepting and reading the pa-
per week after week was evidence that
tie desired it, and sufficient reason for
the plantiffs to mail it to him. He ac-
cordingly gave judgement against the
defendent -White, for three years sub-

on Mr. A. Watson's new building, fell
some six or seven feet, breaking a
small bone in the leg near the ankle.
A few hours loter his comrade Mr. Jos,
Jewell struck an anvil with a heave
sledge in Messrs Gulnitz &Hughie's
shop, when the sledge flew back and
struck him in the face, causing, a deep
gash, which required several stiches to

Toronto Industrial Fair.
The great event in Exhibitions in
Canada is the Toronto Industrial Fair,
which opens this year Sept. 5111 and
closes Sept. 17th It will be specially
interesting on account both of the
large and comprehensive prize list and
because of the special attractions to be
offered. So great has been. the demand
for space in past years and to such
large proportions has the Fair grown,
that more space became a necessity
and after repeated efforts the directors
have secured additional accommodat-
ion on the Garrtson Commons. A, large
new grand stand and a new speeding
ring will be ready by opening day,
The plan for the stand shows a design
of the. most complete character, witli
offices and side rooms to meet the con-
venience and comfort of all who may
be engaged in the ring, or who may
wish to remain as spectators of the
speeding and other attractive *vents.
Every farmer in the province ought to
see this Fair. The special attractions
this year are very numerous and are
much superior to previous years.
Cheap fares will prevail on all rail-
ways.
