RAN;KPENStONERS .s,
A recent paragraph i i this column dealt with the discrimination
practised by the Canadian Bang AGAINST THEIR older
pensioners, in failing to compensate them far inflation. This week it
V oduced. a small voice from the Wilderness. This correspondent
. pointed out "You could , have mentioned that pensioners of 10
years or more standing were the ones who built up the pension funds
when they were actuarily based on an interest return of three
percent. The. yield from the same funds must now average five
Percent; :probably six percent apd still ,without any benefit to the
said pensioners.
Isn't it time the money managers took a sip of the milk of
human. kindness and gave their older.pensioners, an increase. Thirty
• Percent would not be out of the way, having regard to the number .
of lean years involved and the, way their standard of living has been
degraded, largely because they were qot seers of the future. • '
\11th much fanfare .and large headlines the seven banks recently'
disclosed their prowess for 1968, over 1967. Revenue is up 37.5
percent; net profits are up 13 percent, and total assets have increased
by, 15.5 percent.' In the face of such figures the banks' failure to
compensate their older pensioners can only be described as
niggardly: It certainly tarnishes the facade of scrupulous fair -dealing
which they have striven so., hard to compose and present to the
world. Now the time. has. come for thein to divest themselves of this
unsavoury skeletOri in their cupboard.
Talking about pension funds brings. one., to the . plight :Of the,
Toronto Police Fund, which has dropped in asset value from a cost
of $34.4 million to a measley $29.6 .million. Why? It appears, that
their' "money -managers" have had it all in bonds, which fall daily.
The Pension Consultants, William M:.. Mercer Ltd. say: "Money
managers for pension funds must take a more aggressive position in
- order to save the private pension system from; its oWp destruction,
through failure...tp, provide adequate pensions. If we are to provide
pensions for tomorrow in terms of tomorrow's living standards, we
must also invest 'for tomorrow -- not just for today.
• Just to rub it in the performance of Britain's Imperial Tobacco
Company's pension fund is cited. On the 30th April last 91 percent
of the fund was invested in stocks, not stockings, which are even
• worse than bonds. The. cost was $180 million. Their value today
twice that. Yield over the last four years averaged 10 percent. This is'
the only' way that a pension fund should be managed. Surely the
banks have done at least as well as the Imperial Tobacco Company
with theirpension p nston fund.
