Algonquin is `one of Norlrh
America's ;best known parks. it
lts.,within or day's drive of ten
million. Canadians and within
two day's drive of oyer fifty
-million .Americans.
'Algonquin is usually thought
of as a wilderness, untouched by
the heavy hand af• man. Not so.
Most of Algonquin has been and
is under tirriber licence. Some
areas of the -Wilt have been
'cut -over at least three times.
The Ontario Department' . of
Lands 'and Forests state that the
primary purpose of the Park''is
the provision of an area "for
recreational use, enjoyment,
inspiration and education." All
other uses are secondary and
should not interfere. '
Recently` the Department
released a Provisional Master
Plan for Algonquin Park which is
being severely cr•ticized,•
especially _.. why. , the timber

The Plan suggests a• zoning`
system .for the Park which
clearly delineates areas for
recreation, multiple -use, and
preservation of historic sites and
nature reserves. Perhaps the
most• :tontroversial
recommendations are that there
.be.no logging operations,during
July; and August and that .there
be.no cutting within 500 yards
of the shore of lakes, rivers and ,
streams and portages.
