THE ;kb1,10.certt., reANDESOS SWL ProPs. ettatateeetteeteetteteeeeeeeetteeeeeeee tIRSDAY,Aug. 4411, 1892 1?E.90X1.'S From all Parts of Ontetto the crop re ports or1892 aro all that could be dte- aired. It may be eivid without fear of ..eontradietion that in .every County of tf Provinee the yield of grain and eregetables has been quiet up to the, verage, apd in most .cases far beyond tite average. The question of "where ahatl I bestele all my goods and fruits,' will be in order to the farmers of Out alio; and the weather for the past month has been most favorable for hay Slag and harvesting, The hay crop has leen exceedingly heavy, owing to the eantinuous rains in the earlier pat of tbe season. Many farmers report tt double quantity of yield, Both spring an fall wheat have proved a good erop and of a superior quality. The oat crop is also very heavy. In some Sew localities local storms bad prostrat ed the heavy grails but no serious dam age has resulted from the heavy rains atr hot weather. While it would be in ;el -diens to discriminate, it may be safe tea assert that 'Western Ontario yields .0.e palm for abunclaut creme oE all kinds, and. has had the most fayorable weather for savieg the feuits of the ' earth. But if our farmers have been so eigually favored, they should rem- ember that a corresponding responsi- bility devole es upon them of express - :hag their gratitude hi some tangible form to those of their fellow-beiugs who are less highly favored. The tor - Able fosses incurred by the lute con- flagration in St. John's, Newfoundland, whieh reamed three.fourths of the city to ashes, leaving five thousapd people without shelter, affords a most fitting opportuulty to our people of showing their gratitude and of relieving many abousands of pressing want. StriiIiiti1C31,1%6111141..I.Att119.1•1. THEY ARE GOOD IVEY. A western Ontario Grit contempor- ary makes the follewing remarks: - "There is one thing always pressed -.home on the mind of the observer, since the death of Sir John Macdonald, that no matter what happens, the eon lerol of the government of Canada to- day is in the handsef delegates from itte Maritime Provinces either in con trailing the legislature, as in the case of Sir John Thompson and Mr. Foster, or in the settlement of grave inter- mational questions, such as the fisher. es treaty of 1888, or the Behring Sea arbitration in which Canada is repre- sented by Sir John Thompson and Hon C. H. Tupper. In any or all of these matters the voice of the Maritime Pro - 'antes is supreme. In every mission and every debate, it is Thompson, or roster, or Tupper who net in Canada, apeak for the government and ex- poumi and defend public pence,. The 'alder and greater provinces of Ontario and Quebec nom mero ciphers in the affairs of the nation today." As long Uts to Maritime • Provinces send. to Ottawa men like Thompson, Tupper and Foster they are likely to retain a powerful voice in the management of public affairs. The fact is that these "shredsand patches" have always sent able men to parliament, as the names ef Joseph Howe, Sir Charles Tupper, Sir Leonapd Tilley, James Macdonald, of Pictou, Hon. .i. McLean and many others well readily suggest. They:have a habit, too, of making a stir in the world whateyer may be their. sphere of action. Sir William Fenwick Williams, the defender of Kites, Major Itgles, the defender of Jellalabad, Stairs -and Robinson, the latest African beroesovere all Nova Scalene. So also :Rev. Prilatipal Grant of Queen's Una versity, and Sir William Dawson of come from some foggy penint aura. indeed of Nova Scotia it may be said as Homer says of Ithaca, "Its soil is stetile, but its crops are men," ex- ice/A:that Nova Scotia's soil is not ster- ile. Whether it ie the smell of the Salt ea, or the fish diet, there is something down there that imparts vigour to the frame and fibre to the intellect. Several other gentlemen of prominence took the same view, and advocated the system of moral suasion7-which,the3r contend- ed, has already done so much more to enforce habits of temperance than any sumptuary laws hitherto passed, such as the Dunken and Scott Acts. One medical gentleman of high standing in Halifax, in giving' his testimony, spoke very decidedly to the effect that insanity was less the result of drink- ing habits tlian some other causes; that maternity, illhealth, under anx- iety and fatigue form an overstrain of mental and physical powers, as well as relip, ious excitement, were largely the inducieg causes of insanity.
