On Monday of last week Mrs. James
Neil narrowly escaped being killed by
a cow. It appears she left the house
with the intention of salting the cattle,
taking in one hand a tin 'of. salt, and
when nearing the herd one of them
became furious and turned upon her,
knocking her down and commenced
tramping upon her, at the same time
making a tremendous uproar. Mrs.
Marshall Miller, hearing the piteous
cries of Mrs. Miller and hideous uproar
of the cow, at once repaired to the spot
and seeing Mrs. Neil's predicament
armed herself with a rail, which she
applied to the cow freely, but the bo-
vine heeded it not, and kept up her
atrocious work until Mrs. Neil was
nearly divested of all her clothing, and
no doubt the animal would have killed
her had it not been for the timely assis
tance of her husband. When rescued
Mrs. Neil was in a helpless state, and
badly maimed. They cannot assign
any reasons for the cow's maddeuei
career, as she was considered .the pet
of the herd.
