A brown thrush which Mr. Mark
Clarke has had in his possession for the
past three years died a few clays ago.
The owner greatly mourns the loss of

Council Proceedings.
The Court of Revision of the Assess-
ment Roll for the Village of Exeter,
inet at the Town Hall, 27th May, and
duly sworn by the Clerk. The Reeve
was chosen chairman. Appeal of Mr.
Muttart against assessment of his pre-
mises ou Elizabeth street was heard
and the assessment sustained. On ap-
plication of George Anderson, asst. of
rine dog, struck off. Application of H.
Spackman,to strike off one doe', not
granted. There being no further ap-
peals the Roll was finally passed and
the court closed.—The council met
.forthwith by order of the Reeye. All
present except H. Spackrnan- The
minutes of the previous meeting were
read and confirmed. Christie -Carling
that Thos. Oke be offered $3.00 per day
for street }watering when required.—

The butcher business which has
been successfully conducted by Snell
Bros, & Co., for some years past, now
falls into the hands of Mr. John Man-
ning, who has purchased the same and
took possession yesterday (Wednesday)

period theY have made many friends,
which was due to their courteous deal
ingsa.nd obliging ways. Mr. Manning
is an old hand at the business and we
congratulate him on his' enterprise, and
wish him every 'success.

Rev. Mr.Nelly, who has been occupy
ing the pulpit in Cavell Presbyterian
church daring the absence of Rev. Mr.
Martin, exchanged pulpits with the
Rev, Mr. Ross, of Clinton, on Sund•iy..

The Verity Plow \Yorke.
On Tuesday evening a meeting was
called to discuss this much talked -of
question of retaining the Verity Plow
Works here. A few weeks ago the
matter was brought before the people
with a view of ascertaining their sent,
iments regarding the building of a
switch or spur from the station to the
Works, which !net with their hearty
of the establishment ryill soon .nude
cciyo them. Here are hydraulic press-
es, screw presses, iron frames, all of
enormous strength, besides a steam en-
gine and many other pieces of machin-
ery.
While Mr. Richard Davis, Jr., was
driving a number of cattle through
our streets on Monday, one of thein be-
ing of a timid nature became fright-
ened and turned cross. In its wild ca-
reer it leaped fences and committed
other depredations but fortunately no
one was hurt. After several hours
chase the animal was captured and
lodged in a stable where it was kept.

Several rooms in the Exeter Public
school will be closed on Friday owing
to the teachers attending the East Hu-
ron Teachers Institute which is held
in Seaforth this week.
Lieut.•Col. Kirkpatrick, Ottawa, the
new lieutenant governor of Ontario,
was sworn in Monday morning by Lord
Stanley,who had previously signed the
order-in•council appointing lnm.
The writ for Frontenac, vacated by
the acceptance of the office of Lieut-
enant Governor by Lieut. -Colonel Kirk
patrick was issued on Monday. Nomi-
nation June 10th, polling June 17th.
The fast express of the G.T.R. which Left
Ilamitton at 6.36 a.m. yesterday met with a
mishap two mites east of Burlington. An
axLe of the Locomotive broke, and the Loco
motive seemed almost to go to pieces. No
one was hurt and the delay was not great
Wm. Sweet, V, S., of Shelbyville, I11.,
had the misfortune of losing his valua-
ble greyhound, Turk, a few days ago,
having never rallied after falling into
the well last fail. No doubt the Doc.
will miss his noble friend.
Arrangements have been made be
tween the • Grand Trunk authorities
and the Elders of Cayce Presbyterian
church to run an excursion for the
benefit of the Sunday school children
to Goderich on June 23rd.

The heavy frost on Friday night is

Andy, son of Mr. Hugh Oke, while
leading a horse on Saturday last, nar-
rowly escaped being hurt. The horse

The Dominion Government, for the
first time, in accordance with tlie pro-
visions of the Banking Act, have pub-
lished the returns made by all the
banks, of dividends remaining unpaid
and amounts of balances in respect to
which no transactions havetaken place
or upon which no interest has , been
paid for five years or upwards, prior to
December 31st, 1551. There are forty
chartered banks in Canada, of which
10 have their head offices in Quebec,10
in Ontario, 8 in Nova Scotia, 3 in New
Brunswick, and one each in Britsll Co-
lumbia, Manitoba and Prince Edward
Island. The total amount of unpaid
dividends is $10;477.52 and unclaimed
balances $160,570.02.
A very pleasant and interesting
event took place in Detroit on the 1st
inst., whereby une of Exeter's 'former
young ladies in the;person of Georgi•
•iia, second daughter of Mr. George
Willis, was united in holy bonds of
matrimony to Mr. Robert Miller, of De-
troit, formerly of St. Thomas. The
nuptial knot was tied by the Rev, Mr.
Plantz, of the Tabernacle M. E. church.
After the ceremony was performed and
the wedding feast partaken of -the hap-
py couple took the train for St Thomas
and are expected here this na rning.
We have great pleasure in joining
with the brides' numerous friends here
in best wishes for future happiness and
welfare of herself and husband.

the means of retaining the works here,
and further stated that the firm would
give $5,000 of the above sum themsel-
ves. After several short appropriate
speeches were made it was decided to
have a document drawn out, which
was done by Mr, R. H. Rollins, and se
veral contributions were assigned
thereto. After the usual vote of thanks
were.ten es_ed to the chairman, the

Mrs. Robert Kelland and family left
on Monday for London where they will
join Mr: Kelland and reside iu future. -
Mr. Z. D. Johns, who has been visiting
friends in Exeter for some time, re-
turned to his home in Hand ford, Cal.

and relatives.—Mr. Robert Whittaker,
of London, who was visiting at lfr,
Frank Smale's for a few days last
week, returned home on Saturday last.

Miss Sophia Sweet left on Monday ev-

Glanville, of London, has been the
guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Glanville
for a few days.—Miss Lizzie Davidson

where she will remain for some time.—
Mr. Wm. Lewis, of Oak Hill, Wis.. is
visiting his sister, Mrs. Silas I-landford
at present. -Messrs. Jos. Senior and
Jets. Grieve were in Seafortli on Tues-
day on business.—We were favored

Steele, of Kirkton, on Wednesday.—
