Barn Destroyed -
Fire, which broke out about
8:30 p.m. Sunday evening on
the farm of Jim Martin, of
R.R. 3 Goderich, completely
destroyed the 60 by 80 foot
frame' barn on the premises.
Also lost in the blaze was
Martin's entire stock of swine
including 26 sows, one boar, 30
weiner pigs, and five market;
weight hogs.
A number of implements
stored upstairs were also des.
troyed by the fire. A new plow,
a transport auger and a seed
drill were among the most
valuable implements lost.
About P000 bushels of grain
and 400 bales Of hay were also
destroyed.
Mrs. Henrietta Martin, Mr.
Martin's mother, who resides
in a house situated nearby, was
first to notice the blaze. She
said it appeared to have started
in the northwest corner of the
barn, near the gangway.
The Lucknow Fire Depart•
ment which . answered the
alarm, was hindered by the icy
road conditions which prevailed
Sunday 'night.
However, the easterly- wind
of Sunday night helpedyprevent
the flames from spreading to
Mrs. Martin's residence, ap.
proximately 100 feet east of the
barn.
The loss was partially
covered by insurance.

Lifelong Hbby:OfShooting
At 91, Charles Prouse still
actively pursues his lifelong
hobbies of shooting and hunting.
The retired farmer, who liv.
ed for many years near Tay-
lor's
aylor's Corners, in Goderich
Township, has been interested
in firearms since his child-
hood, when he used to play with
his father's guns.
Four decades and "an awful
lot of foxes" later, he stiff en.
joys a day in the bush track-
ing rabbits and racoons, al.
though he has concentrated his
shooting skills on trapshooting
since he was 72 years of age.

sociation, "Charlie'-' was a
special guest at a recent meet-
ing of the association held in
the old Holm?sville school.
The event ..reached many
years back into Charlie's his-
tory, to the days when he first
entered Holm9sville as a stu-
dent at the age of five.
Love of guns and hunting is a
characteristic which . Charle
characteristic which Charlie
Prouse inherited from his
father • and grandfather, and
which he .in turn passed on to
his own family.- °
Three years ago, Mr. Prouse
competed in a trap -shooting
event in St. Thomas, in which
he turned in an impressive re..
cord of 91 traps out of 100.
His son, Hedley, shot 96 traps
in the same meet.
It is too early to tell wheth.
er the family sport will be
passed on to another generation
since Charlie's great' grand.
children are still too young to
shoulder arms.
Mr. Prouse looks back on
many experiences from his life
in the hunt, but the most excite
ing one about which he likes
to rem'nisce is the time he
fell clown a high bank while
he was pursuing a' fox, rolled
end over end and came to rest
against a tree at the bottom,
uninjured, but with a broken
gun.
Going out to the same site
the next m Drning on his father's
advice, young Charles found•the
fox he had been after,. dead 'of
fright and the first not -so -wild
shot.
Mrs. Prouse, who lives with
her husband at 59 Newgate
•
Street, gives no indidation of
whether or not she shares
Charlie's penchant for shooting
but she certainly shares his
pride in the number of shooting
awuxds which decorate their
home.
