Centennial Calling
13y Martha
With the year quickly drawing
to a• close, 1 want to mention
a few "Thank You'4 that
feel we owe.
Since March of 1906 the Cen.
tennial Committee has had the
use, every Monday night (until
-r'ecently) of the board room of
Victo-ria and Grey Trust Com.
• pany. It has been a privilege
. and a pleasure to use this room
and•your Centennial Committee
wishes everyone to know .how
much they have enjoyed having
their meetings there.
There are'.also many, many
people in GOderich and district
who have cooperated and done
some wonderful things for Cen.
tennial.
-The ladies of all the church
groups certainly went all out
and their affairs were all great
successes. ,Their gowns, too,
which they managed to bring to
life., were just -fascinating. Some
of them were so old and delicate
. I would be afraid to wear them.
They and the men, too. of
,.the church groups, certainly de.
served a pat on the back for
a job well done. I just hope they
keep up their enthusiasm ani en.
many more happy sue.
cesses!
Last February (after months
of planning and set backs) the
Toronto Children's Theatre
played "The Tinderbox" to hun.
dreds of excited children at the
big "Rec" hall at CFB Clinton.
For this affair, the school
boards and g great many people
were involved,in order to
bring so many children to one

ed a great .many stringS to make
it all possible. Thanks again,
Al!
Young Canada Week was an
outstanding success, too. This
committee dreamed big -WO
teams and they made! Goodluck
to you, boys, try it again next
year!
We have a wonderful group of
women in •the Dunlop Carlow.
Auburn area. These are "busy
fingers" people. There isn't
much that they don't try and
there have been Many bazaars
and teas featuring t,heir
beautiful crafts.
The largest group is the Pion.
eer Hobby Crafters. They have
a show in the summer and again

Will you ever forget the songs

that I think we would all like

ness, Canadian Opera..
Altllough it was mostly their
membership who enjoyed it, I
'still think it was wonderful to
have this opera in a small town
like Goderich.
Another hard-working group
is the Maple Leaf Chapter of
the I.O.D.E. This group spon-
sored and tool: part in the fab-
ulous "Portraits From the
Past" which will be hard to
forget.
Later, they had the outdoor
cafe at the Courthouse Park
during Art Mart Days.
They have -really gone all
out for Centennial and in spite
of some misgivings have had
great success with all their pro.
jects,and how about their floats
for our parades, weren't they
great?
The Kinsmen and their Kin.
n.ettes are great people, too,
and they have worked so hard
and had so many ups and downs-
, what headaches! Do you hear any
complaints? Not one! These
people, like the Lions Club, Rot.
ary, Sorority, Legion,Shriners,
Knights, Art Club and many
others are made of good stuff!
What, would we do without them?
Don't ask me "What can we do
with them"- because I'm just
about to tell you. only I've run
out of space! (S11.11.11.- I'll con.
tinue next week). Martha.

To Town Musicians
The Goderich Kinsmen town
band, which will be operating
next year without a sponsor,
was given assistance to the
tune of $800 by town council
Thursday evening.
The sum represents the tin.
used portion of the $1,600 ear.
marked, for "Bands" in council
1967 budget: The band had pre.
viously received the*other $800
of that amount;
Dr. J. H. Peters and Gordon
Bannister presented council
with a report on band activities
for the current year, and a
proposed budget for 1968.
Dr. Peters said the band
faced a probable deficit of
$1,832 next year unless it could
get sponsorship beyond the pro.
jected $618 it hopqd to raise in
the commimity.
"At. the present time, the
band is an'tirphan," Dr. Peters
said in making the appeal for
funds. He said the Kinsmen Club
was obliged to drop sponsor.
ship of the band next year due
to other .comm'tments.
He pointed out -that the ppo.
posed budget was $500 lower
than the budget for 1967, but
that the amount estimated was
necessary to purchase new in.

cians to the group.
The report of band activities
and ,the proposed.budget were
referred to the Ffnance Com,
mittee for consideration with
the 1968 estimates.
A subsequent motion by R eeve
H. B. Such and seconded by
Councillor B. R. RobinSon that
the remainder of the "Band"
allocation be given to the town
band, was carried.
