It was difficult to warm, to Chery McCarthy as Daphne Wray, because the character she was portraying was so ef. fected and "theatrical". Miss McCarthy seemed to have trouble with what were pro. bably unfam'liar airs, but nevertheless she acquitted her. self very well. A special treat of the evening. was Gordon' Kerr''s debut per- formance as the timid "Casper, Milquetoast" of an author, whose play appears on the re. pertory company's bill through no merit of its own, but simply by virtue of his aunt's position on the theatre's board of direc. tors. • Kerr was really very funny, and an added touch of humour was created by transferring his hometown from an English vil. lage toLunenburg, NovalScotia, "Home of the Bluenose." Whether it was intentional or not, it, echoed the tenor of his ghastly play, which was nothing if not ''bluenosed." Which brings up another point. Someone had obviously gone to great lengths to Cana. dianize the script, making re. ferences to the Crest Theatre, and the Stratford Festival – in fact, the rehearsal 'itself takes placein the FrontenacTheatre, Kingston. It is a shame this was not extended throughout. Avis was summoned to return to her father at the 'vicarage', and probably ehd up marrying the curate. We still have curates in Canada, but we left the vicar. ages back home. PIONEER (l CHAIN SAWS ARGYLE MARINE &' SMALL E N G IN E S 88 Britannia Rd.
