The Stites' encounter with Kitchener Greenshirts Friday
ntght at the local arena marked the tenth game of the season
for the Goderich Stites in the.kOHAJunier•H anterlocking.schedale.

division of 03A Junior B league, with tg, points, only three points
behind first place St. ,Marys.
Their win over Kitchener was an important one. Earlier Jo
the. week, Owea Soimd Greys had trillicted a crushing 11.5 defeat
on the Siftos. Friday night's yictory. over Kitchener, by lifting
thein into seeond place, gave the Stites new life, just at a time
when it appeared they mtght be fading somewhat.
It's also worth noting here that the Stites won Friday night's
contest without the presence of defenceman, John Pirie.
A Jualor B. Booiter Club official pointed out that the Stites
had won all five previous games in which Pirie had played.
All four defeats had come when Pirie was absent, he remarked.
From these facts, one must conclude that Jehn Pirie, NO 3,
plays an important role in the Stites' defence. Friday night's
game proved to the Stites It was possible to win without Pirie,
even though it was a narrow margin of victory..
For the Siftos, this point in itself matters. a great deal. Pixie
gives the Goderich club a lot of strength behind the blue line,
but he may be unable to play the entire schedule with the Stites.
John, who is now 20, has had three seasons of Junior hockey.
This experience provides him with extra confidence out there in
front of the goalie with other defencem.an of less experience lack.
However, the Goderich Junior B. club will not be able to count
on Pirie for every game, nor even every weekend game. The
Goderich native, who is now in his second year of university
studies at Western, will probably play for his home.tOwn club
whenever possible.
There will come a time though when Pirie must chose be.
tween his hockey and academic careers. As exam schedules
appear, particularly the finals, Pirie will no doubt be absent
more often from the Siftoso lineup.
A Goderich dentist, Dr. W. White, a keen fan of the loaal
Junior B teams, was chosen to pick the three Signal Stars of
Friday night's game.
Few who attended last week's Junior B hockey game here
would disagree with Dr. White's three choices. They were:
Jim Bell, No 11; Mayo Paquette, No, 7 and Alan Howes, No 1, th
Bell, the husky Kincardine centre, played one of his strong.
est games of the season in which he. scored two of the S14ftes'
five goals. Paquette although ate scored no goals, assisted on
two and in general, 'did an excellent job Of checking.and killing
penalties. • Alan Howes, who had donned the goalie pads for the
capably 'in" the •net - for ,the Stites despite his long absence.
It's worth mentioningliere that Dr. White's knowledge of hockey
skill' was not obtained entirely as' a spectator. While'attending
University. of Toronto, lie played inter -faculty hockey with the dental
faculty team.
During a telephone conversation later, Dr. White remarked
that some -changes in the Stites' lineup, as they appeared in the
hockey" program, had been made, .of which he was not aware.
Specifically, they were Hurlock, who was wearing sweater Not,
which is ordinarily worn by Pixie.
The other change in the Stites' roster was the goalie, Alan
Howes, who was Nearing the No 1 sweater in place of Kellestine.
DIF. White voiced the same complaint which many other fans
muat have felt like making to the Stites' management officials.
"Why not keep us inforined of these last m4.nute changes in line.

THE SQUARS
AMID
Jack Evans, coach of the Goderich Stites, related an amusing
incident that arose in connection with the Siftee, recent visit
to Owen Sound.
(In Coach Evan's mind, it was the only bright spot of the
Sifters' excursion last week into Owen Sound considering the
humiliating defeat inflicted upon them by the Greys.)
Just before game time last Tuesday night, an elderly couple,
-approached Jack and asked 'if they could speak with M.Lya Paquette, Y
one of the Siftos' Northern Ontario imports:
With the elderly couple was the coach of the Owen Sound
Junior B hockey team, Frank Bergeron. Frank introduced the
couple to Jack as his father and mother.
"We lived in Ansonville 46 years," Mr. Bergeron related.
"I was employed there with the Abitibi Power and Paper Com-
pany. We know Mayo Paquette quitewe.11, havingfrequently watched
him play in Minor hockey league games in Ansonville."
"Since Mayo Paquette was last playing hockey in Northern
Ontario we .have retired and moved to Owen Sound," explained
Mrs. Bergeron.' "We , wanted to live in Owen Sound wnere we
are closer to Frank here".
"We saw the name 'Mayo Paquette' on your lineup recently
and we wondered if 'he was the same fellow we knew back in
our home town", said Mr. Bergeron. "We wrote to his folks
at Ansonville to enquire about him. They answered shortly
afterwards and told us that it was their son, Mayo, wno had
joined the Goderich Junior B, club this year.
Coach Evans replied that Mayo was then changing into his
uniform in. the dressing room. -
However, he was able to arrange a visit for the Bergerons
later in the evening at interntssion time.
The arrival of two former Ansonville friends gave the Goderich
Junior B star, a real big lift. The boost to his morale may have
accounted for the goal he scored in the final period.
Coach Evans was tickled by the B,ergeron's visit tor another
reason, He was sinning inwardly over the knowledge that, he had
"scooped" the Greys' coach qn one of the finest young hockey
stars to come frotn Northern Ontario this season.
This he accomplished despite the fact that Bergeron's father
_and mother knew all along ofPaquette'sJuniorB hockey potentlal.
