Please don't think I can turn the tears off and on like a faucet, because I can't. But I can hold them back a little, if I want to. What do 'you ad. vise? — FLEXIBLES • Dear Flex: If you can workup just enough :noise ture ` so your eyes glisten a little, fine. But no sob. bine and drenched handker. Chiefs, please. It's hard on the makeup and harder on the family. Dear Ann Landers: Recently you printed a letter from a pastor's wife who signed her. self '"Losing Heart." She was miserable 'because her hus• band's work took all his time and energy. There was never an evening for "just the family." The members of the congregation were critical of her dress, her makeup and her every move. She was ex. petted to serve on countless . committees and stand. in every receiving line.. She wads bitter because they would never own their own home. You_told "Losing Heart" that you were liot qualified to re. spond to her letter. You in- vited responses from women with "experience." I've had 20 years' experience and here • is my response. Dear Losing Heart When I married I was determined to " be the most universally loved minister's wife in the world. I soon learned it was impos. sible. I tried playing the role of Fashion Q'ieen. The criticism was scathing. I then tried dres. sing mere conservatively, and . was carped°.,. -at..,:, "down at the heels", When I ran myselfragged with tom" mittee work I' was accused of trying to be "the center of everything", so I cut back on community wok and did very little. I was Olen hauled up short for my indifference even ,called "snooty". My first three years as a pastor's wife were nightmarish. I felt as if I had failed miser. • abfyF and ' was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. it took a lot of nerve but I decided to talk over my problems with another pastor's wife, one -who was handling her life beauti. fully. She set me straight. Her advice was: "Stop trying to play a role. Be yourself. The person who tries to please everyone pleases no one." Now I dress to please my- self and my husband. I am deaf to remarks that my skirt is too short, my lipstick is too bright, or. my hair is piled too high. I never pour teas or serve on committees unless I truly want to. If a cause doesn't ap: peal to me" I don't becom ' volved, I'm so busy with acti. vities that- do inspire me that I no longer feel guilty if I don't give a piece of myself to everything. My husband is still over, worked, but I've learned how to make our time together count. You can be sure I'm not the most popular pastor's wife in ,the world, but I no* have a genuine Sense of joy and flap ailment.
