The Goderich Signal-Star, 1967-11-23, Page 7Three outstanding members of the Goderich Junior B team, pictured here, were chosen as the "Signal -Stars" of Friday night's game with St. Marys. These $ iftos paced their fellow team --mates to an 8-3 victory over the league strange -Flukey Goals Still Count By Gordie Howe In a recent game against the 'New York Hangers I nuked a goal and it had to rank with one • of the strangest of my career. Golfers will understand howl felt, I topped the puck the way a golfer tops a golf ball. Only in this ,case the puck flip-flop• ped end over end. Ed lCiacomin was in goal for the Rangers and was expecting al Hard shot as I was in close. When I connected with the puck he made his move and couldn't put' on the brakes.. He must have felt like a baseball player swinging for a fast ball when the pitcher serves up a slow ball.. Maybe he swore a little and I certainly wouldn't blame him -the the puck hardly had enough speed to get to the back of the net. Weird goals of this' type come along fairly fre. quently during the regular National Hockey League sea. son and, of course, they seem to be the order o,J the day in overtime during the Stanley Cup playoffs; I can recall any number of overtime playoff games being decided by strange goals. But I think the reason for this is that more emphasis is put on a goal of this type during Stan. ley Cup games. With greater newspaper, ra1ia and television coverage during the playoffs, there is more exposure when •you "luck" one home. They become conversation pieces. Back wnen we won the Stan. ley Gap the last time in 1945. 55, we defeated the Montreal Canadiens on a strange goal ,by Tony Leswick in the seventh and deciding game gf the finals. Leswick ,shot and Doug Har. vey, an All-Star. defensernal if there ever was one, tried to stop it with „his glove and knocked it into his 'own' net. 111•111111 Mt M ® 1111111‘ ., .M MN leading. , Lincolns.. It was in the sixth game when he bounced a shot off the shaft of Bt11 Gadsby's stick to give Toronto the victory. I've never been fortunate enough to score a goal in play- oft `overtime, so I don't know how it feels. I imagine it would be great. It was iii. a playoff game that I scored my strangest goal of all time. It was in the 1949. 50 playoffs against the Cana. diens. Bill Dornan was in goal for them and he and his team- mate, Ken Reardon, and I all rushed for a 'loose puck.dIt w was a three-way race and e all whacked at it with our sticks at the same time. I fell over the two of them and as I was sliding toward the goal on the seat of my pants I looked up and the puck was' falling out of -the lights. It landed in the goal crease and rolled in, We ..won the cup that year, too. ,Farmers. Robinson continued his attack on pro. perty tax exemptions enjoyed by the Liquor Conjrol Board outlet in town at last Thurs. day's meeting of town council., He said the property was assessed for $19,225, which would provide for taxation -at a normal rate of $2,336 a year. Instead, he said, the town re. ceives $1,500 from the provin• ' cial government as a grant in lieu of taxes. He asked on what basis they were' exempt. Town clerk Sherman Blake explained that the LCBO was exempt from educational taxes because of . a statutory pro. vision, • Councillor ,Robinson replied, "I feel we are minimizing our position in this. by allowirrg them • to escape their share of responsibility - to the municipal. lily!' He said council should preys to have the legislation changed. the matter was referred to the Town Solicitor for a report on the legality of the exemp. tion, on *a motion sponsored by Councillor Robinson.
