A highlight of NHI, games. the selection of three stars after
each hockey match; has been • introduced at Goderich 'Memorial
Arena for Jtniior B hockey.
Spectators may, or may not have noticed, that a three -,star
selection was made at the last two Junior B games here, just
after the final period.
A week ago Friday, when the NHL custom of naming the stars
of each game was introduced here, two ,Goderich ladies, Mrs.
Williamson : and _Mrs. Jim Wilkinson, both enthusiastic Junior
B hockey fans, named the stars. They chose two from the Siftos,
Mayo Paquette, a forward, and Robbie Kellestine, •the goalie..
From the Leamington Flyers' team, they chose their •
goalkeeper.
At last Friday night's game between the Siftos and their
visitors, the St. Marys Lincolns, Richard Madge, publicity dire
ector for .the Goderich Junior B Booster Club, named the three
stars. Richard had made his selections and Clem Wolterbeek,
who handles the PA system at the Goderich arena, was just about
to announce them names when the amplifying system was, shut
off from the control room upstairs adjacent to the auditorium.
Clem tried desparatelY to signal the operator in the control
_room but with no results. The power stayed off. However, most
of the fans had already left the arena.•
Since then, the names of the three Goderich Junior B players,
who were the three stars of Friday night's game with St. Marys,
were obtained from Richard Madge.
Tom Williams, No, 14, who plays right-wing, was Richard's
first choice for an obvious reason. Tom led the Siftos to victory
by scoring four of his team's total of eight goals.
Cam Colquhoun, No. 9, who handles a left-wing post on a line
composed of himself, Hank Scott, No 15, at right wing and centre
Owen Freemen, No. 10, was given star rating also. In Choosing
Cam,- publicity director' Madge said Colquhoun best exemplified
the close -checking of the Siftos.
A Sifto defenceman, Jim Gratto, received the third star award.
Jtm, No, 4, scored one of Siftos' goals but it was not that alone
that entitled him to be chosen as a star.
-- "The Sifto defence was solid all the way through," said Madge,
"but Jim was really doing an outstanding job of moving that
puck out of our end." ,
Wondering how this three -star selection got started here?
Would you believe that the Signal -Star publisher had' a part
in it? You will when you hear this announcement at future JuuLul-
B hockey matches in the Goderich arena:
"The three Signal -Stars of tonight's game, as' chosen by —
are: -- , — and --".
This is, to use a TV term, "the way it is."
Signal_ Star publisher R. G. Shrier, after prolonged badgering
from his sports columnist, agreed that outstanding performance
by a Goderich Junior B hockey player during a particular game
deserved recognition. •
"Recognition should not end merely at commending a player,"
it was pointed out to the Signal -Star publisher,
The 'attack was followed up with the suggestion that a reward
should accompany the honour of being chosen a 'star.
"Yes," another enthusiastic Junior •B fan, obviously spotting
a chink opening in the publisher's armour, added, "Each of the.
stars chosen should be given a dollar each time he makes the
honours list."
The author of this suggestion was himself rewarded with a
dark, threatening look from the publisher.
_ N.OW_ watt a minute! Who do yeti think I am? ... Lord —?
R. G. left the rest of the title dangling. •
At any rate, his protest came too late. A clamour of voices
in -:the editorial department heartily endorsed- a Signal -Star
policy of awarding "a dollar per star per game" to the Siftos
Publisher Shrier, after 'supporting the idea in principle, could
not very well withhold a monetary reward.
And so, we are pleased to announce the birth of a system of
recognition which, as fans, we also hope will act as a bonus
Incentive to faster and better play from the local squad.
One more detail about . nue thre.c--scar award policy:. Sifto
players will not receive their awards t ptil thrd!tt ''ortil 1967-68"
season. A record of the three star selections for each game will
bekept-on file here, At the end of the regularly scheduled--gantes,.
the Siftos will, receive their Signal -Star awards by cheque.
'''"A crowd of only slightly more than 400 watched Friday night
as the Siftos .scored 'an upset victory over the league leading
St, Marys Junior B team.
This attendance figure compares most unfavourably with the
1,300 fans who were present for the Siftos' out -df -town game
With the Sarnia Legionnaires last week. The Sarnia arena'`reg•
ularly draws crowds numbering more than 1,500 for their
Junior B matches. -
It's unfair to contrast attendance figures for Junior B hockey
at the local arena _with the number who attend Sarnia Junior B
games without reminding ourselves that Goderich is a town whose
population numbers only 6,700 as 'compared with Sarnia's which
is over 25,000. Yet we must face the reality that the cost of
'maintaining a. Junior W club for centres will run approximately
equal.
Goderich can, as it has proven in the past, support a Junior B
hockey club here. Local and area fans have come to°expect this
fast, exciting brand of hockey at the Goderich arena but it's up
to them to prove they enjoy it by attending the Siftos' home games
whenever possible.
This year's edition of the ,Siftos promises to be one of the top
contenders in,the 1967-68 OHA Junior B league. They are now
in second plae in the central division with five wins and three
losses as compared with St. Marys, the first place team, which
has six wins, five losses and one tie.
