HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1967-11-16, Page 5• • Another deer limiting, season has come and gone. According to reports reaching this corner, it was an em?nently successful one for .a higher number of hunters than• usual. Although Huron • county's season lasted only' three days, that length of time seems to have been adequate. The. majority of hunters in Huron obtained their animal or animals the first day of the season. - ,d>itdging by the number of cars returning south .On Highway ...21' : last weekends carrying Alain deer, •there • mast also have •- "` been -a high percentage of . Bruce county deer hunters who ob. tained a winter's supply of Venison. • • • - -. Another hunting party, this one from Port Albert area, proved `'''''' '°x"!tt was not necessary to drive 100 miles to the top of the 11ruce peninsula, to reap a substantial harvest of deer. The Port.Albert marksmen dropped three of these animals during the first day of the Huron county season. A thickly wooded area of Colborne township, (my correspondent understandably would not give an exact location) yielded two adult does and the prize of the hunt, a six.pronged, majestically antlered buck. , Only one aspect of this successful hunt is regrettable; the Port Albert deer hunters did. not inform the SignalStar sports • columnist of their achievement ' in order that they might have been photographed with their trophies, for the sake of posterity, This. complaint aside, congratulations are extended to the Port Albert hunters on the acquisition of their handsome buck specimen. A most unusual and ironic episode of the '67 deer hunting season involved a member of the'local clergy, the Rev. J. Donald MacDonald, minister of North' Street Inited„ Church. (Since he is a clergyman, we, are inclined to accept his experience as gospel truth.)- Farly last week, Reverend MacDonald left Goderich and `headed north in pre -dawn darkness on his way to a deer hunting holiday in the Bruce peninsula. Just as he reached the top of the airport hill, the headlights of his car silhouetted the shadowy form of a- a - a - (washe dreaming?) - no - it was a deer! It ,as running down Highway- 21 just a few yards ahead of his car. The minister swerved to avoid the animal but the deer•was'not willing to let his pursuer escape unscathed. As the clergyman turned the wheel, the deer jumped in the same direction. Slam! Animal and vehicle collided. Momentarily stunned and' shaken by the turnabout surprise attack from an intended quarry, the Goderich minister recovered sufficiently to unpack his gun and load it. • The deer, which was crippled by the collision, was quickly put out of its misery with one well -aimed shot. Damage to the front of the Goderich clergyman's car was estimated at $150. Is there a moral to -this. deer hunting story? Perhaps. But we'll allow you to draw your own conclusions. t m G -F GOIDERICH FROSTED FOODS MAPLE LEAF VAC PAK 65 HAMILTON STREET DINNER HAMS Le BY THE JpIECE-SLAB 89 BACON La 55c T-BONE .STEAK Ia 95c 64.OZ.
