On the contrary it is composed of basalt and the volcanic rock found on earth. The main elements are oxygen and silicon, with significaht quantities of sulphur, aluminum, iron, cobalt and nickel. There is reason to support the theory that the moon"` was a chunk torn from the earth, millions of years ago. The queue for Surveyor 6 forms on the :right.! * * * •* * MODERN MOTHER - A modern mother writes: "How I wish that the aim was to free our childrenfrom an examination environ. ment,• so that they could be completely free to be happy and joyous in school and filled with excitement in pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. Oh that they could be first„,shown theXioundaries of knowledge in all spheres, practical, theoretical and pilosophical, and then allowed to work their way backward to thevbeginnings. Do not let us bog them down in the past. Let us admit to them'our `present mistakes, our -'fears, our problems, so they maybe ready to tackle them fearlessly when they are' of age." Dear Madam, Where, have you been all these years? In spite of the depraving influence of exams, the children have taken over the schools and universities and are already completely free, happy and joyous - even to the point of burning the Rector at the stake. What further encouragement do they need? . SPACE - RACE FINANCES - It is estimated that by the time the first man lands on the moon the USA and Russia will have spent between them, $100 billions. (100,000,000,000). The Apollo program will cost $30 billions. The same sum could have financed: a 10 percent rise in all US teachers' salaries; a ten million gift for 200 'small colleges; Seven-year scholarships for .50,000 scien. tists and engineers; 10 new medical schools; Three Rockefeller Foundations; New,. Universities for 53 underdeveloped countries, %axing, as small change, One million for the popularization of science. 400,000 people. work on the space program on which five percent of the country's scientists and engineers are employed. * • *- * * *. FRONT PAGE CHURLS -Is Fred Davis, the immaculate host of Front Page Challenge losing his grip on his troupe? On October 16th a distinguished Pakistani statesman, Sir Zafrullah Khan, was vehemently and continually contradicted by . Gordon Sinclair" on Pe question: Which religious persuasion predominated inKashmir. When Sinclair said Kashmir was' predominately Hindu, Sir Zafrullah said: No.• Quite .unabashed, the self-opinionated Sinclair continued to insist that he was right and a veritable dog fight ensued, the voices getting louder and louder. Davis, who is not usually at a loss for a calming word, merely suggested they fight it out off screen. As every schoolboy knows Sinclair was grossly wrong. He was also grossly rude to a foreigner and a visitor, for Kashmir is '78 •percent Muslim. - . A few months previously Betty Kennedy, another regular member. of the Front Page Troupe, asked the State of Illinois law officer i ,from tCicero, , a Chicago suburb, if he implied that she could, not walk ,the `streets of.Chicago by night without molestation. The reply was that, that was exacly what he. meant, to which -Miss ,Kennedy replied: "I don't believe you!" R. 5 Goderich, a renowned horseman in Colborne township, holds the handsome little filly which arrived at his 50 -acre farm last week. Ernie still hitches the mare to a buggy and makes a weekly shopping trip, to town with her. (Staff Photo) Surprise Arrival By Sandy MacDonald For years Ernie. Jackman has been a familiar figure to Goderich area residents as they watched him driving by with horse and buggy, accompanied in . the seat by his dalmation dog, _Spot. Unlike the majority of Huron county citizens, Ernie has never owned or driven a car; instead he has always relied on horse and buggy transports. tion to get him to town for his weekly shopping trips. Erni'e's latest. equine model is a 12.year old bay marewhich he bought last spring. The stand. dardbred mare was in foal then for the first time. Ernie had map a trip to Goderich Thurs. day; November 2, with the mare, not realizing the birth oilier offspring was so near. Thus it came as quite a surprise to Ernie a few hours later when he entered the box stall to. find a newborn filly lying at the mare's feet. Ernie was as elated as any' proud ' father since arrival of the little brown and white -legged foal - assures Ernie of many more years of horse-drawn transportation. The 82 -year -.old Colborne native who marks another birth. day next month is still lean. and fit. He keeps house alone,. except for his canine corn. pinion, in the trim little frame bungalow. which sits closeby the Colborne township sideroad running past Ernie's 50 -acre farm. Last year, for the first time, Ernie spent the winter in God. erich. This" year, he is not so sure he can do that, since the little filly appeared in his barn. Ernie states he- has brought other autumn -born foals through the winter and feels certain he can do the 'same for this one. Five years ago Ernie and his horse and buggy were prom. • inently featifred in the official . _. opening ceremonies of the new bridge on Highway No. 21 which spans the Maitland River at Saltford, just below Goderich. .On that auspicious summer day, July 17, 1962, Ernie, driv- ing a former milk -wagon mare known as "Babe" escorted On- tario minister of highways, Hon. W,A. - • Goodfellow across the bridge in a handsome, black. painted buggy. The sturdy old mare, then 32 years old, pranced smartly be. hind the brass brand which pre. ceeded Ernie and the pighways • minister, who took the reins during part of the ride. Ernie still shows with pleasure the handsome, leather bound scissors, rule and paper knife' Set, presented to him by Hon. • W,A. Goodfellow, bas a memento of the occasion.
