The qua. lity of this brand of hockey was not high enough to attract fans in any appreciable numbers to the local arena. With assurance of some ex. citing Junior B action this win. ter, Goderich fans are expected to be real boosters at all the home- games, , The fact that a,town the size of` Goderich; 'population Under - 7,000 undertakes to reorganize • a Junior B team here, indicates _the wide popularity that the sport enjoys in Goderich and area. If you glance at the OHA Junior' B scoreboard elsewhere in this paper, you'll notice that the majority of•Junior B teams, in both central and western divisions, are supported by much larger centers than God. erich. With the exception • of St. Marys, all other Junior B teams of the central didision, in which Goderich is entered, are located in cities with pop. ulations of 25,000 and upwards. These statistics need not worry local hockey fans. We can compensate for lack of pop. ulation by loyal attendance at home games. If the Siftos make the playoffs, this season), there's a chance that an in. creasing number of home town fans will follow the Junior B's when_ they play those crucial ' out-of-town games. While" it's those colorful, wheeling, hard-hitting Athletes flying from one end of the ice to the other on flashing. steel blades all the while shoot. ing that round rubber disc with ' careless ease that brings spec. tators to their feet to cheer or, shout or boo the referee, this action and excitennentwould • be nonexistent without.thehours of 'behind the scenes work' per. formed by organized groups and individuals who have wilrfigly sacrificed theirlimeand efforts. - to establish a superior style of Canada's favorite sport in God. erich. • Enthusiasm for top notch hoc. key is not surprising consider. ing that Goderich has become internationally famous as the first town in Canada to spon. sor a 'Young Canada Pee Wee Hockey Tournament.' It follows that if Goderich• citizens care enough to promote this sport at the minor league level,, they Will certainly want and expect to watch a more advanced, pro. fessional style version of the game. Since a Junior "B" hockey team was first' established in Goderich, exactly ten years ago this fall, a group of dedicated hockey enthusiasts in town who adopted the name, The Godes rich Junior B Booster Club, have provided the organizes. tional and financial help requir.r ed to promote aYiccessful , .y Junior B hockey teal i. A few years ago, wives of Booster Club officials, acting possibly from a subconscious urge to prove themselves equal to their husbands, formed an affiliate organization which they call, the Junior B Booster Club Auxi. liary. . In one • way or another, the two groups who support the Siftos, must raise a Midget which this year exceeds $21,000 to finance the Junior B club here. One of the biggest fund raising events of 'the season, 'The, Booster"`•C1ub'Stag Night' , takes place each year on the last Saturday night of Septem. •ber, •Members of the club sell 500 fiVe-dollar tickets which entitle the holder to participate in the event, which includes an excellent buffet meal, and also gives him a chance on the $500 bond which is raffled off during the evening. Proceeds from this event go a long way in financing the Siftos' activities. The women's auxiliary Junior • HARRY KERR B Booster Club. sponsor dances throughout the season which are held in the arena auditorium Officials of the ladies' hockey group usually raise• enough money from these events to pay a large percentage of out--of- town. bus transportation ex.' penses. This year Junior B hockey fans from Goder ich and areocan look forward to more variety in their hockey viewing at the local . arena. An interlocking schedule .which places God. erich, a central division team, against teams in- the. western division, accounts for the JACK EVANS a additional clubs which will be featured^ on ,your local Junior B hockey calendar this -season, In other years, the Siftos met only the -five other teams in the central ,division throughout the regular schedule; with the interlocking schedule in effect, Chatham. Sarnia, Strathroy, Leamington and St. Thomas will be visiting the Goderich Junior B team here.
