It appealrs- that _God, the Muni• of l Volice C.oMmission and the local police commission alone a know the answer and they won't tell. It seems extraordinary that anyone should suddenly question such a small $ure as $61,000, when for years now they have been conditioned to such technical matters being veiled from them. After all we have not been told • how the school boards spend their Money. No taxpayer has any idea as to how the Hospital finances stand - or whether they stared at all. People have long since accepted the fact that all Boards, Commissions, even douncils move in a• mysterious way .their deficits 'tp incur, few of which could face the light Of day. The taxpayer must accept the fact that he is simply a drone, whose sole purpose in this life is to bring honey to -the hive. * * * ORN'ITHOLATRY - The Royal Air Force spends $3 million a year in repairs to engines that have ingested birds. Why is so little known about birds? Because ornithscopy (bird watching) has. developed into ornitholatry (worship of birds) `which leaves no time for ornithology, (study of birds). * * * FELIX YOUSSOPOV - Youssopov died in Paris at the age of 81 on. September 27. He was the leader of the group who assas- sinated Rasputin, the Mad Monk, in 1916. Itwas said that Rasputin's influence on the Russian Court which caused the failure of Russia's armies in World War I., * * BRITAIN'S DECAY - One subject on which there is no secrecy is Britain's 'decay'. * * * NORTH SEA GAS - In two years recoverable reserves of 30 trillion • cubic feet of natural gas have been found under the North sea off Britain. This is nearly three-quarters as much as has been proved in Canada to date and ten percent of the entire U.S. -reserves. By 1970 Britain will be using gas for six percent of its fuel needs and this will soar to ten percent by 1980, equal to 2.9 million barrels of oil a day. * SPIES - The U.S. is estimated to employ 15,000 agents with a budget of $400 million p.a. The Soviet has perhaps 300,000, with about 500 in Canada. Canada has 500 agents, all working•at home. Britain spends only $40 million p.a. on secret agents and their number is unknown. Bonn admits there are more than 6000 enemy spies active •in West Germany. What is the average life of a spy? There are no statistics! Kim Philby, who spied on Britain for the Soviet, lasted 30 years. The island lies, off the Peloponnese coast in ten feet of water. It is a complex of houses and streets " built of uncut blocks •of stone and it covers 21 acres. It looks as though it had been abandoned a month after building it. Was it overwhelmed by the great volcanic explosion of Thera in 1450 B.C., which • destroyed the Minoan civilization? A mirror of this diameter involves grinding to a tolerance of one five hundred thousandth of an inch. Other optical telescopes are scheduled, for Sydney, Australia, 150 -inch. Sussex, England, 78 -inch. British Columbia, Arizona, and Provence, France. There is a hint that the Russians may be planning a 269 -inch one. Save for dust storms, the desert is a• good location for a. telescope. A 200 -inch diam 4ter telescope will penetrate into space twice as far as a ItVinch, but it will cost four times as much. . The radio_.astronomer can pick up more distant signals, but he has no equivalent of the spectrum which optical telescopes can photograph and from which the chemical elements in a star anti_ its interior processes can be determined. They will have.to get the mirror to Riyadh safely, for to break such would bring' more than seven years bed luck! G.MeR.
