story f the battle
against fire waste:
• -The estimated 1966
fire death rate
(deaths per 100,000
population) was 2.9—
lowest of the decade.
Ten years ago, the
rate was 3.8; Chil-
dren continue to
figure largely
amongst the victims.

Despite 'population
growth, the down-
ward trend in num-
bers of reported fires
was accelerated. Over
thelast five . years, ,the
decrease was 17%.
Excluding f or est
and government pro-
perty fires, the 1966
loss was put, at $7.72 per
capita, compared with
$7.37 in . 1965. Multi-
million dollar industry
fires continued to swell
the totals „ The '10 -year
industry damage is
reckoned at• over
$600,000,000. '
Taking into account
the indirect economic
factors—industrial pro-
- duction and job disrup-
tion — the real burden
of fire in a year is at
,least $750,000,000, fire
authorities say. ,
Nobody, leas_ t 'of. all
the taxpayer, escapes
the : responsibility of
fire —on the job and in
the. home.
Ten years ago, - the
average cost of fire in
the home was $400. To-
day it is $1,000.
FIRE CHIEF
SAYS:
A penny and electricity are pretty important. The lady knows
that the penny will buy enough electricity to cook her lunch.
But what she doesn't know is that if she puts the penny in the
'fuse box she stands to fry herself - permanently.
Only one thing should go in that box — a fuse. and the prop-
er . size fol— the ordinary circuit. is a 15. Never, never, never
use a30.
if all the ladies of the land (and, for that matter, the gentle-
men, too) realize the deadliness of "over -fusing" there would
be less need of this. advertisement for fire prevention in Can-

fire averages under $500 in damage.
But the truth is that three quarters 'of all fire
deathsoccur in those homes. And not only
death, for hundreds of Canadians are horribly
burned and often permanently scarred in these
fires:
