Many Korean chpziren must face the. biting wind of winter
half -clothed and underfed, their home an unbeated„ shack. Tuber-
culosis takes Its toll of these under -nourished bodies, and
Korea has the highest TB rate in • the world. Through the Uni.
tartan Service Committee, one dollar can supply a child with
a bowl of barley .for. la days or milk for three mmths. Despite
enormous strides forward more than 20 per cent orthe.Korean
people still urgently. need assistance, particularly the young,
the sick and the very old. The USC provides aid with emergency
relief and medical help, sponsors scholarships and vocational
training, rehabilitates families with small loans, offers a 10
pound, barley bonus to any woman attending .a family planning
clinic and is pioneering a pilot project to preyent destitute
'parents, abandoning their children. This year the Unitarian
Service Committee is appealing for $1,106,000 in funds and

WHIPLASH INJURY
Whiplash is a descriptive
4term used to describe the man.
ner in which a neck injury oc.
curs. The Ontario Medical As.
sociation reports that most
• shiplash injuries result from
car accidents. In a rear -end
collision the_ driver or paSsen.
Pr is pushed forward and then
recoils backwards. The effect
of this' is felt mostly in the
neck because it is the portion
of the spine with the least sup,
port and the most movement.
Soon "after such an accident
.the patient complains. of pain
and stifine ,s in the neck, Often
with accwiipanying headaches-,
Although a more serious injury
such as fracture or damage to
a disc may occur, most whip.
lashes only result in damage
to the muscles and ligaments
in the neck. Simple measures
such as, heat, rest and drugs
to relieve the pain and muscle
spasm are usually all the treat.
- :merit that is necessary, The
symptoms often subside in a few
days, nearly always in a week
or two.
In some patients, the OMA
4ays, the neck pain and headache
continue for much longer per-
iods. This may be due partly
to the emotional stress resul-
ting from the accident, or the
subsequent' legal action. These
patients frequently wear a col.
lar to support the neck, and re.
ceive extensive physiotherapy
treatments.
SMOKING AND HEALTH
Canadian doctors now accept
' the evidence that' there is a
direct relationship between cig.
arette-smoking and lung cancer,
the Ontario Medical Association
reports. The evidence is in two
parts:
1. Coal tar derivatives canbe
used to cause cancer in ex. -
perimental animals. This is a
fact easily demonstrated and
welltdocumented, and there are
coal tar, derivatives in cigarette
smoke.
2. Statistically it has been
shown that a higher percentage
of lung cancer comes from those
in the population who are. heavy
smokers than from, those who
are non-smokers.
Of perhaps even more import,.
ance than the relationship be..
tween cigar&te.smoking and
lung cancer is the relationship
between cigarette.smoking and
health in general. Several
studies implicate cigarette.
smoking in many other health
situations. Some of these are
coronary artery disease, arte.
rial disease in general, leg
ipains, digestive diSturbances,
:stomach ulcers, and respira.
