There must be some who remember the cartoons of H. M. Bateman.
He was the man who piiliried all the social taboos 01 Britain some
25 years ago. You may remember "The Guardsman who dropped
his rifle"; "The man who smoked before the Loyal Toast"; "The
boy who breathed on the glass at the British Museum" and the "One
Note Mtn"; a whole series of pictures showing him rising, eating,
practising. until, seen off by his wife, he enters the Philharmonic
Hall and waits hours until the moment arrives. He is a little nervous.
The conductor beckons and he pulls himself a together. He plays
his one note and immediately shows his relief. Packs.up his in-
strument, then retraces all the steps home.
Bateman is 80 years old and hasn't drawn a cartoon for 25 years.
He did one the other day. It is entitled "The Minister who disclosed
the Estimate had Wen Exceeded". The drawing shows therows
and rows of government benches, with every member convulsed,
shrieking with laughter at this huge joke,. while the Minister is -
equally elated with his disclosure.
Today he draws for his own amusement only: Tax Inspectors .
with long noses, as they steal the nest eggs from nice families. "Do
you know I have seen a tax inspector with saliva running down his "
mouth at the prospect of taking some extra money from someone."

How do you get a place on the ballot where the Canadian people
Can vote NO to hazy theories; NO 'to -spending milligns we haven't .
got, for far too many programs of questionable value; NO to courts
more interested in kindness to criminals than laws and protection
of decent citizens; NO to those many bureaucrats whose airn is
to perpetuate their often -useless jobs.
Put places to mark these on 'the ballot and you'll roil up the
biggest patriots' landslide in history. And it's high time.
