It was Jiiot long after the announcement of the purchase of the property by the Provincial govenment.") ' After" reading. an article in The Signal Star that the irb. , wince of Ontario had purchased the old Point Farm and other adjoining, properties, -for use as a Provincial Parke -i felt I must see .the place before too -many changes are made. An old friend of many years standing started off .one fine morning in July, 1964, and on the way up could see traces of the roadbed Of the O.W.S,R.R. Reaching the road leading off the- highway, the -entrance was not very preposessing. We drove part way in where we parked the 'car and walked the rest of the way to where the grounds and the old hotel used to. be. While my friend was pointing out old hammock hooks in the trees, my m`.nd went back to my first visit to this, place and my first picnic. In the summer of 1907 I was invited to a picnic at Point Farm by the Misses Fraser (Mary, Eliza and Margaret). On the appointed day, I arrived at their home, all scrubbed a'hd dressed and_with my donation to the picnic. At the Fraser house, there was waiting aband. wagon, fgom Polley's Livery • stable, with their grays,. We didn't have far to go for the next stop, just across the street, to pick up Miss Emma Wallace, •. who also showed signs of her mother's careful grooming. Her young brother, who had not been invited,, insisted on com. ing, until his mother rounded him up and made reference to a mice afternoon, sleep. From there we went to the Walton home, on West `street where we picked up Miss Lena Watton and her two nieces, the Misses' Armour of Detroit, who were spending the summer in God. erich. Then up West Street to the Square, to North street, Where we took on Miss Polley and from there to pick up Miss Constance LeTouzal, (wtroIwas to get to .know better in Grade 7). Our trip continued along Vic. toria street, dawn the Saltford hill and over the bridge (whose boards clattered) through, the village of Saltford (all this was most enlighteningand new, for I had never been so far from home before) and up the Dun- lop Hill to Glazier's Corner, on past the Leeburn Presbyter- ian Church till finally we turn. ed off the road and into Point Farm. ° After getting out of the band- wagon and looking around, I had never seen such a large building before, with well -kept lawns, bowling greens and ten. nis courts, with colorful flowers and many gay people around, it was beyond my comprehen. sion. I was duly impressed. Then we started down the hill to the beach. Many paths were cut through the cedar trees. It was hard to decide ,which one to +•tke. And then, what a glorious beach, much larger than the one at God. enrich! Here, again, were many people, some 'in the water, some lying around, fn in shady spots. There was so much to see and do here. A quiet spot was chosen for our picnic, And what a grand assdrtment of food to choose from! Things we were not given at home! Then the trek up `the hill started. One last look around at the top of the hill and there was our bandwagon waiting 'to take us on the long trip back haute, where we ar. rived in the early evening. A grand. day and one that still stands out .in. my memory.. P.S.; Other picnics of„note were to Attrills, when the sold. • iers were in training there one summer; another was to Mene. setung Park and also to Ben. miller.
