Ever wonder how our three professional hockey players, present. -
ly • residing in Goderich, put in their' spare time during the off.
season between National Hockey League schedules? Contrary to
what a large percentage of -the public may think they 'don't spend
their days on . the golf; course and their nights at. the I1ar. If other
NHL players are ?as •btisy, as this trio in Goderich, it amid fairly
be said that they are an ambitious .and industrious class of athletes.
•
The fact that Goderich is home to three NHL Players"should allow
our hockey -minded ° citizens" some justification to 'brag• a little,
particularly when you• reflect that few towns the size• elf Goderich -can
boast of even one N1IL'er. Some localresidents may argue that,
since Goderich is ; internationally 'acclaimed as the first community
to establish a minor league pee Wee hockey tournament, it is: only
natural that professional hockey players should make their. home
here. ,
A more logical explanation for their •presence here though, is the
fact that Goderich was ,their native comm'.}nity, so why shouldn't
they return herb'for the summer mopths?
Larry Jeffrey., wno missed action during the Stanley -cup finals,
reported during a telepito:te conversation that the knee injury which
kept him off the ice during the Toronto -Montreal series, has cleared „
.up. The cast vitas removed Monday,. May 8, at a Toronto hospital and
Larry discarded the crutches along with it, which youjnight have
seen him using if you were glued to your T V set for the presentation
of the Stanley Cup to the 'Leafs. ,. ---,,
The Jeffrey name has become associated with harness racing
as ' well as hockey. ' Larry and ,his brother have formed a partner•
ship for this enterprise and have; started out with a modest stable
of two mares.
The oldest, a three-year-old, , has seen action at Western Fair
raceway and the? Greenwood track in Toronto. In one of her trips
around the oval at Western, Mary Glenford established a snappy
2:072110 mark for,,the mile route. "
Their two.year-old mare, Nancy.Bay, may be entered in her
maiden race early this year, ,possibly a t the Victoria day races"_
scheduled for May 22, at the Goderich Agricultural park .
For the 'past two or three 'years, Larry has owned and operated ,
a snack bar at the bathing beach south of the town harbor and "it
will be reopened early in• June for another season," said Larry..
Jeffrey has also acquired fiftya acres of land along Huron county
highway 25 near • Carlow. He plans to crop it this year and later it
will be seeded down with a pasture mix." U
"In fact," said Larry," we may eventuallybuilda home' out there,"
In conversation with th'e 'Detroit Red Winger, Paul Henderson,
the Lucknow native;. "'who has adopted Goderich as his summer
home, it was disclosed that he was presently enrolled in a sec.
• urities sales course with a Toronto brokerage firm, 'and according
to Paul, it's a "first time" in the records of NHL history that a
player has joined the staff of •a Canadian brokerage company,-.
Paul, his wife and family 'journeyed toy"Florida last month where•
they enjoyed a relaxing vacation before returning- to 'Goderich early
in May. - -
Those of you who read the sports section of the London *Free
Press may have noticed an advertisement which appeared several
days.. ago featuring Turk Broda's summer hockey school which
was to be conducted at'The Gardens arena during -the 4 weeks from
August 7 to September 2.
. Henderson, along with Dean Prentice of the Detroit Red Wings,
will share equal time as instructors -at the school. Prentice is
scheduled to teach during the first. two weeks and Paul stated
that he woald be in charge of instruction, for the last two weeks
o Ugust.
It's a first venture for Turk , Brodat, former goatie,.for the Maple
Leafs, into this rapidly growing phase of producing professionals
in this sport. '" '
Broda, .who's coached London's Junior "A" team for the past
two seasons, seems assured of success 'ill this project. The first
day after the ad appeared, he -was flooded with 150 applications;
maximum number 'that the school can accommodate would be
around 430, according to Paul. - - -
One' other NHL'er, Gary Doak, Boston, Bruins' defenceman, re.
mains oto be heard from. It's reported that Gary was employed at
Argyle .,Marine and Small Engine shop for the summer season.
Asked if •he was anticipating another season with the Boston club,
Gary was noncomittal, stating only that he was awaiting expectantly
the forth coming NHL expansion draft slated for June 5. At this
tirp.e, the six new American hockey clubs entering the NHL, will •
be bidding for five new players from each of the six established NHL
hockey clubs td form the nucleus of their respective teams.
