Spor1s Scene
Ey Sandy MacDonald
Coming into town Saturday afternoon, this observer noticed
several anglers trying •their luck in the pond at the William Hill
• Huron county forest tract on the east side of highway 21 about five
mien. north of Goderich. ,It's a likely looking spot for trout of any.
• species, .situated as it is between the tall evergreens bordering it
on the north , and. south. Obviously -though this water doesn't hold
• trout; or at" feast not in any 'significant quantity, The fishermen..
who 'had been casting there early: in the afternoon'were .gode :when
• the Signal Star 'reporter returned about antour later. Presuming that
'if they were catching fish they'd have stayed all day, this reporter •
can't .draw any other conclusion than that they went away empty
handed. • `
It ,.was a different story over at Benmfller where the gristmill
pond above Pfimmer's feed mill is abundanitly stocked with speckled
trout each year. In fact, this particular water received three trout
populations last year, fcuii lands and forests officer in this region,
Roy Bellinger. ,
-..Roy reported tothis col= list over _the weeke dthat. 5peckler1 trout,
numbering - 5,000 approximately, had been released in stream's
throughout the ten townships of Huron county which fall under his
region, The pond at Bennniller, as mentioned before has already
had two batches of ',speckles" emptied into it prior to opening date;
other streams in the area which have received an injection of
speckled trout -are "Chisholm's: creek," on the 4th coiace i1bn• of_.
,Goderich; Holmesvtile creek, 1 1/4 miles east of that hamlet on No. '
#8 Highway; a pond in West Wawanosh, fed by a spring creek loc.
ated north of Auburn was given a supply and also the Belgrave
creek.
About ten days ago, ---'Roy stated that he had released 15,000
rainbow trout eggs °in the Nine -mile river, between Dungannon and
Lucknow.'
"Those eggs should be hatched by now", said Roy,,because you
could see the eyes formed in them, when they .were put in the wa°ter."
• "As they mature, they'll head downstream to spawn;T'-explained
Roy, "But, if the mill dam at Dungannon will hold them from get.
ting beyond the point in the'river, there ought to be some excellent
results for trout ;fishermen ,up there in about three years' time."
Getting back to the trout fishing scene at Benmiller, for a min-
ute or two, it should be mentioned that an expert trout fisherman was
working the Waters of Vern Gledhill's• pond above the old woolen
mill. Les Thompson, from Sarnia, who writes a weekly outdoors
'feature for the daily newspaper there, under the pen.name, "Rodney
Creel", was busily. displaying his skill 'ty flicking a 25 foot line
into the pond, in an area which appeared to offer a haven for lurking
trout. °
Les was using a fly, or flys, which had been moderately success.
ful for him as he stated • that six speckled were stowed away in his,
wicker creel. The long, fibre -glass pole 'he was using, was one he
"""'had "fash'lofnred himself.
•
Earlier Saturday morning, in fact it must have been at the break
of dawn, "Rodney Creel" hada couple of fair ,sized rainbow. in a con.
servation pond which had just recently been established an.ci,Stocked
by Lamhton,county conservation officials.
In company with two _other anglers from Sarnia, Les,had arrived at
the Bennniller pond about `9, a.m. It might be mentioned that his two
companions 'weren't. as .successful as the outdoors columnist, whom
they •acknowledged to be an authority on' the art of trout fishing.
Just-' got word that the Ontario Amateur Softball Association
is holding a clinic on two ' important .aspects of• this game at a
meeting scheduled for Sunday, May 7th, at 1:30 p.m. in MacKay
Hall, North Street, Goderich.
Max Scheff will be offering instructions -to all those interested
in refereeing softball games which will be played in Huron County
when__ the. Central Huron Softball' League begins their schedule.
Max Scheff will be delivering some useful and timely advice
regarding the managemtn of a ball. club. Any community who may
be planning to enter a team 'n this season's Central Huron Soft.
ball league would be well advised to have one or more delegates
attend this session. Players are urged to attend.
Andy Davidson, chairman of th e Ontario Umpires' Association
will also be •speaking at Sunday's softball forum.

The soccer season opened May

tators before the game started
and His Worship the Mayor

every way he could.
The game -itself was some.
what- spoiled by a `high wind, but
the. boys gave it everything they
had. They set a cracking. pace
right from the start. •
The Victorians, having the wind

of the game took the lead right
away with a quick goal by Kim
Arbour,
The Hearts fought back fiercely
and through,. great work by Rick
Fisher and Doug Wray (Hearts

the Victorians' end of the park.
The Hearts were awarded a pen-
alty shot on a foul by a Vic-
torian defenceman and Rick
Fisher missed by inches -from the
resultant penalty .kick.The wind
was still a big factor in the game
and with some very good 'ball
control the `'Victorians went fur.
ther ahead, Brian Allin putting
them `oro goal up. Dave Will-
iams scored a third goal just
before halftime.
Onthe resumption of play it was
the°Hearts turn to turn on the heat
and they sure did. Doug Wray
scored for the Hearts direct
from . a corner. kick, a,direct.
which
,is very seldom seen in soccer
and he deserved all the congrat.
ulations showered on him his
teammates.
Brian Allin (Victorians) show.
ed wonderful ball control on a
breakaway and he squared the
ball -.-across for Dave Carruthers
to score an easy goal, making, it

The Hearts came' ,close on a
number of occasions, twice hit-

moments. Larry Seimon scored

Roller Skating Opens Friday
`(By Sandy M Donald)
,From .a conversation with
arena manager Bill Lumby last
week , we learned that roller
skating might get under way this
Friday evening, if the weather
cooperates. Bill reported that
the floor still held a consider,
able amount of frost since the
• ice was taken out two weeks ago,
thus making the terraza floor wet,
and slippery and•hence`too risky
to allow skating until the tem.
perature rises a few degrees to
warm i p the air inside . and dry
out the arena surface. •
• roller skating has become in.,
'breasing'ly popular along Lake
Huron resort centres and the
Goderich arena management has
also promoted this sport. 'It was
introduced' here !Lasa `season for
the first time, according to Bill,
and since the opening day, • att.
endance grew, until, at the close
of the season, rollerskating was
attracting capacity crowds.
At some resort centres, 'en.
tertainment is provided the
younger generation of tourists
and holidayers• by the establish.
ment. of outdoor roller rinksr
Everyone is aware that Grand
Bend has offered this outdoor
recreation to, summer visitors
for years. Only -recently have rec.
reation-,officials in other towns.
realized what a boon the roller
skating pastime is to the tour•
tst trade. Hayfield is starting
this year.
An enterprising group at (hi -

appears to attract more partio.

of recreation and -is competing
strongly *lth the indoor rink at
Kincardine.
Asked if instructions were
available for beginners, arena
manager Lumby reported that cryo
formal 'program of instruction et.
isted as yet. The beginner was
provided a pair of skates free,
for his introduction to the -spout
nand given 'the -fundamental, rules:
which would apply to roller skate

Presumably those„ directions,
would consist of words to the
effect that it was necessary to
keep your balance, lean forward
slightly and for the sake of your
health. and soundness of limb,

It's prestimed here, that if the
novice roller skater survives his
first lesson; wtl no more ser•

and bruises, be could be con.

"Once" they acquire the feel of

"they keep -coming, pack." '
