The 50th anniversary of the year in•'which Canada's women were
first allowed to vote in FederaT Elections will be commemorated
by a Canada Post Office 5c stamp to be released on the 24th
May, 196', Postmaster General, Jean-Pierre Cote announced
today. Although ''omplete enfranchisement for Canadian women
in national elections was not granted until 1918, ills Wartime
Election Act of 1917 -'permitted votes to those who OTd relatives
in the country's armed services. Appropriately, the new stamp
Is based on a•design conceived by Helen Fitzgerald of Toronto;
it is medium in size, vertical in format• and produced in colors
of mauve, black and grey. The design symbolizes womanhood
upheld by the power of the ballot incorporated in the pedestal-
• like support.
