Two new awards have been
added this year to the impres-
sive total already donated to play-
ers and coaches belonging to the
Goderich Minor Hockey Associa-
tion. Constable Tom Fortner, of
the Goderich town police, has
this year donated two trophies
which will be awarded annually
to the two men who contribute
the most to the promotion of
minor League hockey, and to the
development of young hockey
players. Winners of this trophy
during its first year in effect
were Ken Crawford and•Warren
Moland, both coaches of teams
in the'GMHA house.leagttes.•
Constable Fortner, during the
presentation, surprised everyone
by stating that arrangements
were being made to have a third
award. 'presented. It would be
donated yearly .to any citizen,
'in .or araun'd the municipality
,of Goderich, who, in the esti-
mation of a board of judges to
be named, had contributed out-
standing service to- any field of
sports competition, not neces.
sarily 'hockey.
This trophy, still in the plan-
ning stage, would be designed
as a crest -shaped plaque which,
would eventually be hung in the
auditorium of Goderich Memorial
arena. Instead of passing the
trophy around from hand to hand,
each year, the recipient of this
award would receive a certificate
of merit and his name would
be engraved on the master plaque
at the arena.
During his speech, Constable
Fortndr gave credit to several
Goderich citizens who had •Con.
tributed their knowledge and time
to,,.the process of arranging -the
Tom Fortner Memorial trophies.
Among them were Gliff Hugill,
Sergeant Crawford . and Chief
Fred Mtnshall of the Goderich
Police Commission.
