of Goderich, 16 yews ago, is still operational although it is used
only on 'Saturday and Sunday afternoons. It provides a lift up the hill
"for a distance of approximately 600' although the bottom of the
-slope--is another- 1004eeL.bey„ond. a base of the tow. The majority
'of skiers who have used this slope, end their crun at the base of
the town.
George Ross operates the tow on a non-profit basis, depend-
ing, entirely onthecontributions_ of hard-core skiers to payoper
acing costs. (Sometimes this source of revenue" is not sufficient
and George ends up paying the extra expenses but of pocket.)
Judging by the lack at local interest in skiing, one might suspect
Goderich area citizens of losing their desirefor winter sports
in general. lIt aint true!' Just add 'dooing' to ski and you'll come
up with the. name of the sport that's monopolizing every spare
moment of a growing number of snowmobile owners in and around
Goderich. •
As evidence of the mounting popularity of cruising .,the snowy
slopes and valleys around this .part of Western Ontario, ;consider
the recent skidoo meet held at the flats (the golf course) of the
Maitland Country Club. 1 t' attracted a surprisingly large number
of entries and the event was considered a real success. '
A 1..1.1, • snowmobile dealer reports that six of these vehicles
were cruising the slopes around the. Maitland -river at Benmiller
last Sunday. This dealer,' by the way, already has 19 orders in for
next year's models. He's sold out and is• not hopeful of getting any
replacements, Just lo be sure he's well -stocked for next year's
demand, he has booked 30 of these" motorized winter tsdooters'.

thoroughly familiar :with the „models and capacities of the var-
ious. types of snowmobiles. However, for. those of us who have
not had an opportunity' to become acquainted with the snow -cruisers,
here are a few pertinent facts.
The majority of snowmobile manufacturers turn out three diff-
erent models, classed by their horsepower. The -economy model, which
is not 'in strongdemandisrated at 7 /Y2 hp.,1f. you can afford a higher
priced model, you'll get ah engine that develops 14 1/2 h.p. This
line of snowmobile will cost you about $785.00 (excluding tax)
and provides enough power to carry your wife or girlfriend. If
the lady doesn't feel sporty enough to ride the slopes, it's no
tro ib1e to find a couple of youngsters adventurous enough to climb
on. Another model more powerful than the first two mentioned
is ,available brit its price mounts as rapidly as its hp,. hence
it hasn't been as popular as,, The medium -range s pw.cruiser._
•
The snowmobile driven by a 14 I/2.h. p. motor •cruises at speeds
up to 25 mph and will climb a• pretty steep grade. (If they reached
the top of the river' valley at Benmiller last Sunday, it's" safe to
say they could climb almost any slope this side of the Blue Mount.

It was stated by a good authority that DougQ.verholt owns thew
fastest snowmobile in town. After a little tinkering: with the- engine
of his high powered . model,- Doug- Fs- reputed to have -travelled at

discussed. Members should not be hard to find considering the
