In Gold' Coast Regiment
By W. E. „Elliott
Capt. William H. Gundry, of
H. M. Gold Coast Regiment,
caused quite a stir when he re.
`turned from West Africa, in1902,
to his home town.
Goderich had already. we..

giment and now, aged 93, re.
sides at Lucan,-
Capt. Gundry, also 93 . died
Dec. 29 in Regina,- as already,
.briefly noted in The Signal Star.
'Re was undoubtedly -the only God.
erich °resident to serve in the
Gold Coast, Which before his
death became Gambia,, an indep.
endent nation within the British
Commonwealth.
Will Gundry was a brother of
Thomas Gundry, for many- years
a noted auctioneer. The brothers
were associated in operation of
a large livery business on South
Street, located in. the building
pow occupied by Goderich
Motors. Will- was a county _eon.
stable, and an officer of ther33rd
Huron Regiment. As result of a
kick from a horse, he wore an
artificial ° leg. He married in
Goderich, in 1904,.Agnes Edith
Washington, who died in 1947.
They moved to Regina in. 1911
and Mr. Gundry as a land appy
aiser was an active partipipant
:in the growing years of Sok
atchewan. The only surviving roe•.
lative at the time of his death.
was a sister, Mrs. W.G. Young,.
the former Christena Gundry ,
who died in a Saskatoon nurRi;ng
home on Feb. 6 at 99.
It is believed that Mr. Gundry
went to the West or(. the ,advice °
of G. F. 41air, who' in 1949•:

firm of Proudtoot, HaysandBlair
with offices on The Squame. Mr.

Mr Gundry, visited' him .while
First World War was going, on,
and recalls Will watching the
war. bulletins in a newspaper
window and "feeling terrible"
because his artificial leg" kept
him from •active service. It be.
came necessary for her,to go out
to Regina after his Beth, there
being no one else to assist the
lawyers settling the estate.
Many- souvenirs of Capt.
Gundry's African service had
been preserved for more than
60vyears, and have been offered
to a museum in the West,
