Theatre. It is • a ;nark Of the ever-increasing' appreciation ,of thelOCalaudience that in spite of_frightful weather, ther house was solidly packed 3 for all three performances. This S never to be underrated,,fpr - without the 4audience where are the actors? Bravo to the hardy Citizens. • In return for the.ir enthusiastic; support, the audience re,ceived scrams in the dark; murder smack bang up, there, on the stage and a great dollop of treachery. a recipe guaranteed to satisfy the most demanding of Miss, Christie's followers. It can be argued that the format of these plays, like the boOks, is more or less predictable. The j fact remains that "The Mousetrap" Is the; record.breaking play of modern theatre and has enjoyed 15 years of constant patronage in London's West 4End. Obviously,' therefore, the play is a good one. with fantastic staying power. • Dr. Benners Jackson' ' the WODL adjudicator said that the production', had been well worth the stormy trip. He gave great praise to the director, Joni Clavir of Toronto, and to the cast and crew during a private adjudica. tion after_ Saturday's per. formance. In my limited *exper. ience with th e august indivicl. uals of the adjudication business I have found that they are either much too severe ° pr much too --bland. In this-insbfriart stitere-St that Dr. Jackson couldhave found more to offer in the Way of con. structive criticism, Which would have been ,received intelligently • and without rancour. Too little • criticism is sometimes aS Itr• itating as WO much. Atter weeks of extremely hard work it is a distinct let.down tohave the'Whole thing„packaged, wrallped upand, handed back within a matter of -minutes. • ' Dr, Jackson found the muted set very much to Is liking and felt that it furpiShed a solid, ,uncluttereil and believeaNeback. ground to the eXciterrient of the , piece itielf. The fireplace was Partitularly noteworthy, Too 'often the walls' quiver ominously if an actor oplaces an unwary elbow on the Mantle,:Thks_beakty could have sustained a vigorous kick. • „ Miss ClaVir „moved the cast about the stage with easy sklll, Ilwhich is no mean feat. She was less sure when it came to pace. In a mystery drama the dir. ector is hampered by the absolute necessity of ' letting- the char' acters reveal themselves', and their minds. During the first act however I. felt that this Fro. cedure could have been greatly quickened without serious loss to suspense or continuity.
