Work arid Pleasure.
Was what a company of about 25
men aed as many women assPmhled at
the residence of Mr,,,Thornae Shute on
WedneSday afternoon fur, fiist to take
pars in the wort and secondly for
pleasure. During, the afternoon the
men congregatedswith saws and axes,
around a, number of logs Which had
been placed in the yard; and began
tearing them to pieces; while the lad-
ies inside the house Were busying them
selves sewing carpet rags and other
work. The young men labored indus
triously during the space aet apart for
work with an anxious hope that a
good time was in store for them when
the sun had become hidden behind the
horizon; but before the time arLired an
linitenee pile of wood had been cut and
made ready for the stove. It is not
necessary to state that supper was par-
taken of heartily, and after the work
of preparinw and eating the repast had.
concluded, the younger portion of the
gathering as well as some of the older
one, indulged in t social dam* until
the hours of the morning' warned thtun
that it was timefor theni to repair to
their several homes. Everything was
done by the host in providing delicac-
ies and everybody seemed to enjoy the
occasion. .Mr. Shlte is a genial and
obliging neighbor, a good citizen, his
home being alwaysopen for gueSts,and
before taking their departure on this
memorable event each wished him
health and prosperity for many years
to come; and the words "Long may he
wave" loudly re-echoed throughout the
house.
