,By W. E. ELLIOTT
"The Compally. have laid.out a town,
called Goderieh, at the confluence of the
River Maitland with Lake Huron, which
promises, from its local advantages, to be-
come one of the most important and
flourishing settlements in the province."
In a poster with -map, describing "lands
in Upper Caliada to be disposed of by the
Canada Company," potential emigrants
were advised that climate and soil in the
Hnron Tract'of, 1,100,000 acres were as good
as any in Upper Canada. '
A second ,poster, giving particulars of
transportation cost, cost of cleari,n land,
andcondition of sale, bore the date -of 1832,
which was probably the date of issue of the
first. . The originals are in ° the British
Museum, but photostats became available
in Canadd'recently, after 135 yea.
Centres 'Got'Posters,,
The'posters evidently were distributed,
in English, Scottish 'and 'Irish centres,- ac-
counting for much of the immigration to
Huron and Perth. — -
The poster with the nu bears the
names of the Canada Company- directors,
most of them now the na:mes of townships
" in Huron; Perth, Lambton and Middlesex:
Charles ,Bosanquet 'Cgovernor); Edward
Ellice (deputy governor) ; Robert Biddulph,
*Robert Downie, John Eastliope, Charles
Franks, JO h n• Fullartoil William T.
Hibbert, John HUllett, Hart Logan, James
Mffrtin T. Smith, Henry Usboriie.
(We do -not seem to -have given Mr. Smith's
name .to ally township hereabouts.)

"Several 9nterprising colonists, it is
stated in the body of the„ poster, "have left
their farms in neighborhood of York to
•settle at ' Goderich, with the ifiteation• of
erecting Vbrewery, distillery, brick -kilns
• and a grist -mill; a tavern.and a sawmill al-
ready have been" erected. The harbor—, the
only one oh the Canadian side of the lake,
is capable of containing vessels of •the
burthen of 1::$0 tons
"The
scenery on the River Maitland
has—been described 1s more like English
than any other in America. There is abun-
dance of brick -earth and potters' clay -in
every direction around the town.
Constructing Roads
"Roads are in -progress from Goderich—j-.
to the Towa_of London, Phere they will join
the toads otthe flourisNng settlements on
Colonel Talbot's Lands, and connect the
' Huron -Tract •%with Port, Talbot , and the
various settlementsltnd towns on Lake Erie'
and the Niagara Frontier . A road' has
been completed from Goclerich, by- Wilmot
and Gue:ph, to the -head of Lake Ontario.
and York . . . ToWard the improvement ,of
water communication, the building of
