Tuesday the Siftos defeated the last place 'Hespeler Shamrocks 7+8 in Hespeler. Friday, in God. erich, the Siftos tied Preston ..egionnaires 4-4. These games left the Siftos with a record of five wins and four ties as opposed to seven losses and moved them two points ahead of the Hanover Hurricanes and Guelph Junior R egals who are tied forth place in the seven -team /eagle. With eight games remaining in the regular schedule, the ,Siftos have their sights set on finish. ing among the top three in order to gain the. better play off posit- ion. There will be a six team play- off, layoff, with the first place team meeting the fourth place team in a best of seven semifinal. The second and fifth place teams will play a best -of -five series, the winner to meet the winner of a similar best-of•ff ve round be. tween the third and sixth-place finishers. The winner o f that series would then play the win- ner of the other semifinal in a' best of seven final. Next Tuesday, the Hanover Hurricanes _will -be_ here„L13oth_-these :gaines. loom large in the Sifte's plans to advance their position in the standings. The game against Hespler was a see -saw affair which saw the Siftos come back from a 3.1 first period deficit to out score the Shamrocks. 3.1 in the second and 3.2 in the thirdperiod to come out on top 7.6. A total of 38 penalties, evenly divided between the two teams, were handed out. Many of them were for high -sticking and slash. ing, as the referees failed to con- trol the game properly, allowing the rough play to build up to the point where Sifto coach Wayne Horner considered removing his team from . the • ice, rather than risk injury to his players. Siftos Bob Wilkinson was ban- ished -from. thegame for pro. testing too vigorously the ref. erees' failure to take action when Wilkinson was clobbered overThe ` head-ty-a -H-espler player's stick: Only Wilkinson's helmet saved him from serious injury. • In the scoring department, seven players scored single goals for the Siftos. John Pirie scored the firstperiod goal, while:Jim Farrish, Brian Carroll and Wil- kinson scored in the second. Ross Forster, Murray Henderson and Fred' Gilbert,,,tallied in the final frame. Gilbert's goal, the game win. ner, came With less than two minutes remaining. Fred has scored only twice so far this seaspn, but -both have been real, big ones. The other was the goal which gave the Siftos a 5.5 tie, 'with Elmira here on December 6, • Cassidy, Kolopak with a pair, de Vries, Evanst, and McBride scored for Hespeler. The game with Preston was a good one to watch. It featured wide open hockey and good goal tending at both ends of the rink. Dan Burkhart, the Preston goalie was especially brilliant as he foil- ed many dangerous Siftoassaults on his cage. Siftos' Al Howes plays,, well too, despite the fact that he was knocked cold by a shot which hit him on the head during the pre -game warm-up. - Goderich . opened the scoring, when Cam Colquhoun scored at the 4:11 mark on passes from Dennis Lassaline and Jim Farrish. Goals by Jarvis and Burkhart put Preston ahead by one 'before the end of the period. Brian Carroll tied it up with the • only goal of the second stanza. Preston moved ahead 3.2 midway through the final period on a goal by Ball, but Ross Forster knotted the count two minutes later, With just over five minutes left, Burk. hart scored his second goal of the night for the Legionnaires to give them a 4.3 lead. The Siftos fought back and, with 89 seconds remaining, Wil- kinson blasted a -Waist l igh "shot past the Preston goalie to gain the tie for the hard-workinglocal squad.
