n
A.----Itldustrial expansionthe
of progress and one is linked to
the other. We need industry to help our as-
sessment through increased industrial assess
ment, and with the associated growth in popu-
lation, help to share our individual tax load.
I feel that our town has every facility that
any industry could want, and that we °must
promote industry in every possible way to stop
our decreasing population, and to provide
future employment for our children, and
young adults.
Q.—Is there any single thing that could
be done at any level of government that would
improve the welfare of the citizens of Gode-
rich?
A.–There is no one "single thing", but
rather many things and at different levels of
government that if done could improve the
'welfare of the citizens of Goderich.
1.—Federal: Reassessment of the criteria
for determining the need for "designated
areas" on a municipal basis; taking into
account the proportions of the munici-
pality; the economic "growth needs of the
municipality; the population trend over a
15 -year period; the "boom, and slump"
seasonal effect of tourism.
2. --Provincial: A more reasonable ap-
proach to assessment debt, particularly
"in regard to mining tax assessment, with
a larger -share for tfie municipality.
A re-examination of our water supply,
with provision for- the needed, and neces-
sary reserve that we are lacking now.
3.—County: A reassessment of our coun-
ty tax levy to ensure the citizens' of Gode-
rich that they are paying in direct rela-
tion to the services provided.
A subsidy for the lighting on our main
entrance highways, and the Court House
'Square, since we are the county seat
4.—Municipal: Providing our towns-
people with modern, efficient government
that recognizes, and will act on all our
town problems, and. will promote the
townin every way, and endeavour to
reach a realistic program of de+lopment
and taxation -,for the people of Goderich.
