Church Report Hits Apartheid
Apartheid. "the !post abomin-
able symbol of the worst hum11-
4ations that the centuries have
imposed upon Africa."
• The quotation is attributed to
the Secretary-General of the Or.
ganization of the African Unity
and appears in a report just
published by the Committee on
the Church and International
Affairs of The United Church of
Canada.
The church committee feels
that South Africa's policy of
apartheid "threatens the peace of
the World with the spectre of
race war," and suggests in a
- resolution -that the-Unftgd Church "
should "publicize the evils and
dangers of apartheid, discourage
migration to, and Canadianin.
4c vestment in, South Africa."'
The war in Vietnam is termed
the most critical of the world's
troubles and Washington's unwill-
ingness to recognize t -he Cbm.
munist regime in Peking "as
the only legal government of the
People's Republic in China", is
called the most -foolish of dipjo.
matic follies.
The report, entitled "The
Church and World Society", got
a rough going over at Waterloo
last September when it was pre.
sentedto the 22nd United Church
General Council. But, as the
chairman of . the committee re.
marks in a foreword, "there
can never be unanimity of opin.
ion in the church on current
international ibsues," •
Most would agree, hoi/ever,
with a statement that "the sign-
ificance of the present era for
the Church is the stress on neat-
er justice, on a better distribut-
ion of the bounty the world has
to offer. The doctrines that Christ
preached almost 2,000 years ago.
love one another; share what you
have; do for others what you
would wish them to do for you;
be men of peace and goodwill.;
are becoming not only the rally.
ing calls of political radicals, but
the policies of national goven.
ments."
The report includes the re-
solutions adopted by the 22nd Gen-
eral Council of the United Church
which condemn in explicit terms
the war in Vietnam; lack of auton.
omy for the people of. Angola;
failure of the United Nations to
s the P Poplas epublio
China; the policy of apartheid
in Rhodesia and South Africa.
Other resolutions make positive
suggestions towards the relief_
of poverty in the world and toward
disarrpament. and peace.
