Dr. O. 0.. Hickman, of the CDA.
animal research Institute in Ot-
tawa.
Dr. Hickman notes that Can-

fewer than 10 per .cent of her
cattle while Great Britain, New
Zeaand, Sweden and Norivay
test 20 to 30 per cent and Hol-

"Any goad dairyman knows
his hihest-producing cows wih-
out, weighing 'their milk," Dr,
Hicieman says, "But it is very
hard for even the best herdsman
to recognize • a one or twoper
cent increase in the herd's milk
production from' an improved
feeding or breeding program.
"A one -per cent rise in the
herd's 'production amounts to
only 'one-third of a ipotrid, per
day per caw or a total 10 -pound
increase' per 'day for a 30 -cow
herd.
"This is hardly recognizable
at each milking or in the level
of milk in the bulk taruk. But
it i„ only through an accumul-
ation of these small increases
that dairy herd production will
remain efficient "
The researcher says that -a
oneper cent increase means
3,600 pounds more a year for
a 30cow herd, or $144 (figuring
milk at $4 a hurtciredweight).
