A WEEKLY LOOK AT By TRACY S. Mw day — for six months in summer '67 --- you can see the wonders of 70 countries of the world in Montreal and have the time of your life doing it ! Pausing for a moment to think of it. -- Montreal is in a most strategic location for the great- est, show on earth. It is the world'A, Iargest inland 'seaport, home of the world's two largest transportation corporations, and. on the international air map, Montreal is the air -crossroads of the world ! Now, with the opening day of April. 28 •a half -,year away, en- thusiasm for Expo is mounting at a steadily and rapidly -increas- ing rate, in the city of Montreal® itself, ,throughout Quebec prov- ince generally, and Expophilia is spreading all across this country. • From the outset, and through the preliminary period -of gesta- tion, a great deal of the Expo story had to be taken on faith. True, the International Exhib- itions Bureau had authorised an Exhibition of the First Cate- gory outside of Europe for the very firsttime— but the veiy magnitude of the undertaking was too -staggering for many to grasp; and the task of develop- ing man-made areas in the mighty St, Lawrence River - ap- peared to some too great to be capable of achievement. LIJDINGTON place at one time, • A .day, a week, even a month/ would not suffice to see every phase of ail exhibits being set. up for Montreal's 'greatest show on earth' but in full realiza- tion of this, 'arrangements have been made so that the visitor may select, and having selected, be freely transported to the land of his pr her desires. Daily there are new news bomb- shells about Expo -- the possi- bility that U.S. President John- son will open the American Pa vilion for example — and week- ly in this column will be ga- thered the most titilating of the titbits, so that the man -in -the - street in each and every Cana- dian town and city will be kept abreast of the latest and best at Expo asp plans are miide for a visit to 'the greatest show on earth' that opens April 28, 1967 and continues until October 27, 1967, seven days a week from 9 am. to 11:30 p.m. and with the entertainment area open until 2:30 a.m. (Address correspondence to Tracy S. Ludington, EXPO '67, at.1005' Kildare Road, Montreal 29) During the first week of Oct- ober, however, 'the word was flashed: Expo will be ready on time ! - Immediately there was a great upsurge of interest in all parts of _.Canada,._sn. great._an, uPSu!ew_ in fact, ` that the over-all ,total in the attendance forecast was upped from 30,000,000 to 35,- 000,000. 5;000,000. And on the fabulous site, like ' mushrooms on a spring lawn, the Theme buildings, the Nat- ional Pavilions, bridges, harbors, underground surface - level and overhead transportation systems are springing into view as ifrby • magic,'in all their weird and won- derfull forms. Many Canadians visited the Chicago, Seattle and New York , Worlds Fairs —'but 'these -were largely commercial and not sanctioned by the International Exhibitions Bureau some Lanadians visited the Paris and russets Exhibitions, but these e—itrEurnpe, and-Wavelomnis a costly business. ' -,..;.. • Expo '67 is in Canada, Expo '67 is next summer with Montreal's. location and today's modern transportation, Expo '67 is at.every Canadian's door -step. Looking over the Jong list of fabulous features being pre- pared for the visitors to Expo, one realizes immediaterly that superlatives have lost their meaning in the attempt to do justice to a great many of the individual exhibits. For a long time people have .wondered about a curious as. semblage of rocks into what inight have been fortifications, with a round tower, that are found in' several places on this second lair - gest of Italian islands. Phantom Moose Missed GERALDTON — Two stories from the Geraldton moose hunt. Four hunters claimed'they saw a completely silver -coloured moose in the Wintering Lake area. All took a shot at the "phantom" — and missed! Two large bull moose were found by an Iridian trapper with antlers locked in combat. Both of the animals had died of brok- en necks. Sar. dinia bears many marks of the ious positions 'including throw, ing of spears. They ante -date the Romans but • nobody, as yet knows by how many, centuries. Whether these artifacts are re • lated in any wwy to other early European civilizations, or, to the prehistoric group who painted pictures on the walls of caves near Nerja, Spain, remains a mystery. When these new findings are finally tabulated, history may "'have .to be rewritten to accom- modate new facts, just as it is being rewritten now with dis- coveries of new Samarian cities in old Persia, art work and an alphabet wnich antedates our previous conception of Egypt as the cradle of civilization. As would be expected. Sar disia bears many marks of the Roman amphitheatre, contempor- arily erected, with the Pantheon in Rome. In rather recent years , a church just across the street from the amphitheatre used stones from it to build a new church. Almost everything in Cagli2ri bears the imprint of early Ro-J man occupation, including a via- duct which, in one business sec. tion, is left standing in such a 145 ESSEX STREET • GODERICH, ONTARIO RESERVE FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR RESERVATION CALL524-9371 'or 524-9264 Catering to Weddings—Banquets—Luncheons—Etc. manner as to form an ancient front for a group of small shops.
