'i Am A A..1Q .—
We're .sways amtv'Azed at how
modern `dant" ,Aft ioa appeaais,
irhether you approach it by air
or by sea, writes Lowest E. Jes-.
sen in the Turlock (Cal.) Journal.
As our'shiip slowly, moved into
its looks at Casablanca modern
white buildings ` sketched into
thdisbance, with 'a .skyline of
high office structures, in the
• center of the city. Back of ;piens
aid' warehousing .that ,wotrl4 be
a credit to San Francisco' was the
industrial center .,which be-
spoke the volume of countnerce
funneled into this metropolis for
the Share desert cOusitry.
Wile this is Africa, there is
nothing to partilcu'larly remind
us of it as we normally think
of the 'continent that is more
than twice the size of North
America.
For here 80 per cent of the
'people speak French. And since
Morocco has won its independ-
ence 'from France, Englisth is
supplanting French. There are
some tribal and Arabic lang-
uages,
anvbuages, of course and the signs
comm'Only are in Arabic and
French.
But, while some of the,bearch-
es and business and reSidential
areas still retain 'popular names'
given to them by American
troops, nothing could speedily
change •tthe Muslim c'haaracter im-
pressed upon the . original 13eT-
bers through 'centuries of Arab
dominance.
And here is where we began
to see- interesting .differences.
One, of course, is the people.
Whil^ -•the men in the dirties
*mostly wear western clothes, the '
women wear a modified chadri.
• Instead of complete concealment
of their' face, their head dress

their eyes, and the lower part
. of the face, from the tip of the
nose to the body clothing, is cov-
ered. Eyebrows, eye color and
expression, and sometimes a por-
tion of their ears are visible.
Even this limited, concession is
•an the way out. For more and
more young women are employ-
- epi in offices, and there they
remove the veiling from their
faces.'
Our guide, who was. careful
to tell us the has but one wide,
took us through' one of the pub-
lic buildings and museums
where the Arab kind of a di-
vorce court hears larger • and
larger numbers of complaints
from wives in plural maratiages.
The 'Muslim religion., permits

to lead ibis family procession of
the Ara wife, then the second,
third and faurrtlh in a line, each
walking, each carrying vegeta
a+biles to 'meat in a basket atop'
her head, each .carrying a baby
on her back and watching 'the
tribeN of children -- to repeat,
'VMs kind of an Arab husband
has to, be one of the world's
best diplomats.
In Moroeoo, Arab husbands
are beginning to learn that life
is. easier and' moa -e pleasant
when they, have fewer wives.'
We didn't have• an opportunity
to discuss the situation with any
of the wives, but our guide le.ans
.to 'the conclusion that multiple
marriages are on the way out.
The system of trading a couple
of cows for another wife and
accep.inlg in turn a dowry worth
considerably more than the cows
from the bride's family, appears
to be falling. down.
There are other interesting
changes, too. Our tour through
the City of Casablanca was ntueh
like any other modesn City. 'Then
we headed for Rabat, the capital
of Morocco. Out' on the country
roads for more than an hour,
we' found ourselves on a low
plateau where dry la•itd farming
is on an'ebvrious marginal basis.
But where windmills 'pump wa-
ter there is oasis green and
where electric pumps (yes,. pow-
er lines run the 50 miles from
Casablanca toward Rabat) are
seen AN hole fields of grapes, veg-
etables, and grains display lush
growth. Comparable to many
irrigated areas near Turlock. In
small valleys where creeks flow,
the eraps .look particularly good.
Arab farmers swathed in their
familiar longrhes, ride donk-
eys, 'clothes,
drive camels, plow with
. anything from an .old stick to a
Modern tractor. Here the spread
between the past and the 20th
century is accentuated.
Upon arriving in Rabat we
were shown Morocco govern-
ment buildings,, taken to the
Palace of Dar' Es Salam, to the
Palace of King Hassan, and the
