East would win with the
kink of spades and return
the jack of spades to force
out dummy's ace. Sooner
or later, South must try the
club finesse, losing to
East'sking, then East would
take the remaining spades
defeating the contract.
This unpleasantness can be
avoided if South refuses the
spade finesse. Instead de-
clarer wins" the first trick
with dummy's ace of spades.
South gets back to his hand
with either a diamond or a
heart and tries the club
finesse. If the finesse suc-
ceeds, any line of play will
bring home nine tricks, but
the finesse loses.
Now what can East do? If
he leads spades, dummy's
queen will set up. If he leads
anything else South can
makes his 'contract with
one spade, two hearts, two
diamonds,,anti four clubs..
