CMA Health Tips:
Prejudice Takes Jobs

lepsy cannot be entirely con-
trolled, there are anore epilep-
tics who, lose their jobs because
of prejudice and lack of under-
standing than lose them because
of the number and severity of,
uncontrolled attacks.
Lt is difficult to define epi-
lepsy because of theseveral
forms it takes. Periodically the
persons suffering from epilepsy
will have .an interruption of
brain function and may replace
normal function by abnormal
movement or behaviour. The
result may involve a simple
staring spell, a drop attack or a
minor jerking of the limbs.
These are generally called Petit
Mal attacks.
However, epilepsy may show
itself by periods of senseless
behaviour or by attacks of major
convulsions which are generally
called Grand Mal attacks. If
these conditions are not cum -
trolled, tnyise affected can
neither be safely employed nor
allowed to drive a car.
Fortunately, great strides have
been made in adding to our
knowledge of epilepsy and its
treatment. The first ,rnajor step
forward came in 1857 when
Charles Lacock, society doctor
and obstetrician to Queen Vic-
toria, discovered that bromides
would -often suppress epilepsy.
"-puenobarbital was
found to produe similar results,
