Miss Mary Jane Wilcox who left here
some time ago for Goderich, returned
home recently bringing with her an
ille;imate child. After her arriving
the child lived but a few days and was
buried by the council on Friday last.
A fire occurred in St. IMarys on Tues-
day morning last about ? o'clock in the
brick block owned by G. McLean, on
Queen st., and occupied by J. M. Adam
grocer. The two upper fiats were bad•
ly damaged. The building was incur
ed.
Mr, A. Q. Bobier has been receiving
large quantities of Maple Syrup and
Sugar during the past 'two' weeks
which he retails out at a reasonable
low price. We can vouch for the pal

Those having gates opened on the
street will confer a favor on the con

Word has been received from Mont-
real that Mr. Samuel Neil, formerly of
this place, owing to a fracturedlimb
bas been confuted to the hospital in
that city for nine weeks. The in jury
sustained is now'healin and his •re•
covery is anxiously looked for.

The office of Cobbledick & `Folland,
Hardware Merchants, has been under-
going a thorough renovating, The
walls and ceiling have been artistica'•
ly decorated with alabstine while tbe
floor has been coyered with oil cloth,
on the whole it now presents a hand-
some appearance.
The Busy Bees have succeeded in
clearing the debt of the carpet and, mat-
ting in the Trivia Memorial church.
The balance left after the sale of work
amounted to something over $5 which
has been raised by subscription since
the entertainment, whereby those fix-
tures are entirely free from all encum-
berauces.
The item in our last issue referring
to the new block to be erected` in the
spring should have read, by Wood Bros
instead of Snell Bros. The building
will be erected as early :in the spring
as weather will premit. Mi•. Wm. How-
ard has secured the masonwork. Ross,

During the past week Mr. John
Spackman, Real Estate Agent of this
village, succeeded indisposing of lot
3, concession 3, Biddulph,'and also sev-
eral other minor sales. This shows
plainly that thepeople are beginning
to appreciate the services of the gent-
leman in his new field of labor- Part-
ies having property to dispose of will
find it to their interest to give him a
call.
The Rev J W. Bell, B D., Superin-
tendent of the Ontario ` Missionary de
partment, delivered' an able sermon in
James st; Church on Sunday morning.
and another in the evening in Main
st. Methodist church to the Royal Tem -
piers of Temperance. Qn Monday even
iiig he gave a lecture in the town hall
on "The house we live 'in' profusely
illustrated by a powerful. magic lan
tern, when the effects of alchol were
fully shown. Mr. Bell's lecture was of
great breadth and thought, the clear-
ness of presentation being suchas to
command the attention of all who were
present to hear him. A large attend
ance of brethren were present from
several places and attend the meeting
with the Exeter Lodge.
A woodbee took place at the rest
dence of Mr. John Willis en Friday last
week and after laboring' earnestly
throughout the day pleasure of anoth-
er source was resorted to in the even-
ing. During the day they succeeded
in cutting about 35 cords of wood. this
is considered a good clay's work, espec-
ially with cross -cut saws. From the
jovial manner in which all seemed to
enjoy themselves at night, showed
plainly the, toils of the day had been
forgotten, and after continuing until'a
late hour each seperated, for their
homes.
There died at Park River, North
Dakota, on the 20th ult., . of ; 'Typhoid
Fever, Thos. Avery Marty n, son of T.
B..Martyn, of the llth con. of Stephen,
after an illness of several weeks. At
the time of his illness he was at the
Windsor lIotel and in spite of all care
his spirit . took its flight. Deceased
was a promising young man, who, had
his lite been prolonged, would no doubt
made for himself an honorable mine

tv The funeral took place on Thurs
day, the 21st of January, at 2 o'clock
and the remains were interred in the
Park River cemetery amidst a 'targe
gathering of relatives and friends. We
extend our heartfelt sympathy_ to the
bereaved family in Ontario, and also

W, G. Bissett was engaged exereisin„
his colt attached to a cutter and on
nearing the residence of Thos. Trivitc,
Esq„ it made a sudden plunge into
the ditch at the same tune throwing
the occupant out of the vehicle into
the snow, The animal fought for liber
ty, but We G. being a skilled roan with
the reins succeeded in conquering the
quadruped. No injuries were done to
either of the three that were iinplicat
