Dear Ann Landers

Dear Ann Landers: I'm a girl:
—13 years old. My father

ing to you abodt.
Dad was away from home on
my birthday last year. He was
away on my. birthday again this
year. He was gone en my
brother's birthday and also on
Mother's Day. We Were sure he
would be home for Father's Day
but he didn't make it. He was
also out of town on his own
birthday, which was last Tues.
czlay. and on his and Mom's wed-
ding anniversary, whichwas:
yesterday.
What would you say is more
important to ,my father, his
isses Big Days
family or his travelling? --Idaho
Falls .girl. •
Dear Girl; Why does your
father travel? Is he a tennis.
bum, or a beach comber? Or
is he selling on the road to make
a living forbis faMily?
If he is selling on the road
to make a living for his family
can tell you that his job is far
from easy.
Do you think he enjoys being
away from home on your birth-
day- or on Father's Day •or his
own anniversary- The next time
you start to fell ferry for your.
self, Kiddo, shed a tear for yrr
father. He rates compassion, not
carping criticism.

Dear Ann Landers: 'NY hus-

15 years • and this terrible habit
he has is getting worse.
Whenever we eat in a rest-
aurant Mel leaves the table at
least three Unica to go visit at
another. table. It doesn't matter
that we have invited one or two
couples to be our guests. The
moment Mel sits down his eyes
comb the room for someone to
go over and sit with.
It wouldn't be bad if he stayed
away five or ten itninufes, but
he is gone for 25 minutes at a
tithe. I usually have to go' get
him so the waiter can takeliig
order—and then I have to look
for him again when his food ar-

' Mel just loves it -When someone says, "You certainly are
popular. You know everybody."
I'm sure that's why he runs tell
over the place. Will you say
.something on this subject,
please?—M. Barrassed Wife.

Dear Ann Landers: Our
daughter's three-year Marriage
ended in divorce. Under the
property, settlement, the wed-
ding gifts from the wife's family
were tO be kept by her. The
gifts froin the husband's 'family
were to be kept by hijp.
The sterling flatware came
from both families so it was
agreed that our daughter would
keep all the flatware and give
her ex-husband some other
items in exchange.
;Several of the ex -in-laws asked
her to give back their silver
gifts. I felt this was rock bot-
tom, but she complied with their
requests and did not ask her
ex-husband for anything in re-
turn.
My question is this: Should
wedding gifts be returned after
three years?' Should our daugh-
ter have ignored the request of
her ex-husband's relatives?—L.

Great Lakes sailors may get

Would you believe pink grain

The Lakehead. Chamber of
Commerce has'asked the owners
of grain elevatOrs to paint them
in pastel colors to brighten up
the harbpr. Instead of grey, the
elevators may be pink, pale blue,
green or yellow.
One elevator has already been

luctant. The reason: it costs
about $225,000 to paint a large
elevator.

panies, are repainting their
Prairie elevators red and orange.
Normally they are grey.

Wife Stranger Every Year
By Bill Smiley , ,furniture and similar fripperies You shoul4 pee whim EfAirao
This month, my wife and 1 and frills,
size.
will :observe, with the customary
stunned incredulity, our 20th
wedding anniversary. It's a long
time' to live with a strange
woman. specially when she
becomes stranger every year.
At time of writing, I don't
know just what form the cele-
' briation will take. A fatted calf
wouldn't be appropriate. Be-
sides we don't have a fatted
calf; only a prodigal son. None
of our mortgages are anywhere
near the burning stage, for the
occasion. And we are definitely
not going to celebrate the event
y starting a new family, But
think of something.
A friend of mine has an old
dog. He's a huge boxer,- about
11 years of age. My friend
sometimes, when he feels like
being depressed, begins figur-
ing out ..how much that mutt
has cost him over the' years.
It's now running about„$1400.-
.
I develop a flutter in my left
eyelid and a twitch in my 'c'heek
every time 1 flirt with _the,
'thought of what that woman has
cost me in the last two decades.
Take my word, it's over $1400.
* *
The first couple of years
weren't so bad. 1 was a veteran,
going to university, and our
total income was .$00 a month.
We didn't save much, but we
staggered through, with the
help of vacation jobs. When
the first baby arrived, we were
in clover, as the government
jumped our allowances to an
opulant $88,
•
Affer graduation, life became
rosier. I reeled into the weekly
newspaper business, with a take-
home pay of $35 a week. But
even at that, the Old Girl man-
aged to squander every cent of
it. She blew it on food and
*
About six years later. when
1 was up to $50 a week, and
could see with satisfaction. the
poqibility of building up. a nice
little estaee, she sabotaged,. me
again, Said we needed a car.
And we've never been out of
debt since.
From there on, it wasdown-
hill all the way. She began
thinking money grew on me,
and as the income mounted
slowly, the debts mounted swift-
ly. It was "Gimme, Gimme,
glmme" all the way. _
We'd been married only about
10 years when she began agi,tat-
ing for a house. The cosy little
two rooms, with shared ba'th,
weren't good enough any more.
Oh, no. Not for her. Just be-
cause a lot of other fool people
lived in houses, we had to And
I was fool enough, or weak
enough, to go along with it.
Eventually, I reached that
plateau of success which had
once seemed only, a dream —
$100 a week. Do you thing that
satisfied her? Not on your nayel.
She kept right on hurling money
in all directions.',..Out went the
scrubboard and in came' one of
those big, white washing Mach-
ines. Out went the ice -box and
in came that other big thing
that makes the ice cubes. Out
went the nice quiet .carpet
sweeper and in came one of
those bellowing, swollen vacu-
um things.
By this tinie,it was too late to
put a-filigerin, the -dyke. Be
sides, I needed all my fingers
for counting up our payments.
No, the only solution. was nose
to the grindstone and turn the
,wheel faster and .faster. I once
had a huge, hooked Roman nose.
,)
Now, 1 don't want you to get
the wrong idea. Don't think for
a moment that My partner Of
20 years is 'extravagent. She's
never once pressed for a Cadil.
laC. She doesn't own any -1110k,
not even ear.muffs, She hasn't
whined for a trip to Europe.
(That little Irip to Vancouver
this summer 'was merely a soft
mother's heart. She had to see
her first-born.) '
err t:t t:t
No,
- she's not .dernandin .
She'll wear a dress as often s
twice. She' a Perfectly willing
to be seen in a yeir-old car,
month-old shoes or last week's
coat. She didn't even want her
children to go to private schools.
Just have their teeth straight-
ened ,and take music lessons at
$13 a whack.
tit •
And 1 bear no malice. I'm
like the guy iri the cartoon, a
big business success, who told
the interviewer, "Everything I
have, I owe to the sheer greed
of my wife."
It's been a great honor and
privilege to spend' 20 years
wrapped around a lovely' lady's
little finger. I wouldn't feel
comfortable in any other pos-
ture. So, happy whadda-ya-call-
it, darling.
