There has been a decline in pheasant populations in this area in recent years, and the reasons are not clearly under-- stood. nder-stood. The effect of the hen in the bag, agricultural pesticides, and loss of pheasant cover, are all factors which could be con- trolling pheasant populations; efforts will be' made to evaluate their .effects during the five. year study. The season for Kent and Lambton Counties has been ex- tended this year, at the request of organized sportsmen groups. Large numbers of pheasants are raised and released in these areas and the_ _latex._" ,meson. should provide good hunting op- portunities as a larger percen- tage of agricultural crops will have been harvested. Hungarian Partridge A seasan. has been established from Oct. 1 to Nov. 26 in the following areas: the Counties of Brant, Dufferin, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Kent, Lamb - ton, Lincoln, Middlesex, Nor- folk, Oxford, Perth, Waterloo, Welland, Wellington, Wentworth and in. the .Townships of Hay, Stephen and Usborne in Huron County. A seasan from September 24 to Nov. 26, has been established for all other areas of the pro- vince. The bag limit for Hun- garian partridge will be eight per day, sixteen in possession in all areas this year. The best' hunting in the pro- vince still occurs in Dundas, Carlton,._Russell and Storment- Counties in extreme eastern Ontario, but reasonably good shooting has been available dur- ing some years in .some portions of Brant,. Haldimand, Welland and Wentworth Counties. •Grouse? Seasons and bag limits are very similar to those which were Seasons, established for 1965. The sea- son for all four -species opens on Sept. 15 in the area north of Highway 17 from Mattawa to Spragge and north o£, a line be- tween Spragge and the Interna- tional Boundary north of• !Cock- burn, Island in the north' chan- nel. Throughout this area the season closes on Dec. 15 for all four species with the exception that in the Territorial. Districts of Cochrane, Temiskaming and the portion of the Kenora dis- trict north of the eleventh base- line the season for sharptails and ptarmigan continues to March, 31st. This longer season allows residents of, these north- ern areas to take advantage of very lightly hunted ptarmigan and migrant sharptail popula- tions whenever they are abun- dant, without a special season being- declared:- - A season has been established from Oct. 1 to Dec. 15, follow- ing, forthe southwestern Coun- ties of Brant, Dufferin, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Hal- ton, Kent, Lambton, Lincoln, Middlesex, Norfolk, Oxford, Perth, Waterloo, Welland, Wel- lington, Wentworth and Dur- ham and the Townships of Hay, Stephen and Usborne in Huron County.
