ANN
LANDERS
• Dear Ann, Landers: Please
fix up my letter so it will be
good' enough, for the newspaper.
.r need help awfully bad.
I play on a ball team and my
problem Ls my mother. She
drives me to. all the games. If I
am taken out of a game and a
substitute is brought in my
mother goes over to the man-
ager and swears at him. • She
also cusses out the kid who
tales my place and of course
his. mother doesn't 'like that
very much.
I am afraid the manager is
going to get fed up with my
mother and pull me out of the
lineup altogether. Please tell
me what to do about this prob-
lem. --Nervous First Baseman.
Dear Nervous. I have never
known •a kid to change his
mother so 1 am not going to
suggest that you try.
Dbn't worry about the -man-
ager throwing you off the team.
I'm sure he understands your
problem and he will not punish
lou • for something that it not
your 4ault. Maybe one. of these
days the manager will get fed
up with your mother and throw
her out of the ball park, which
might not be a 'bad idea.

Dear, Ann Landers: Your xe-
sponse to the wife who decided
to make a life for herself in
spite of her,husband's.drinking
was fine --as • far as it went. But
it didn't go far enough.
Her pity is destroying her
alsohlic husband as effectivelq
as her hate used to. Certainly
it .is pointless to nag him, but
itis equally pointless to remain
silent, while her halo gets
tighter,
This woman should under-
stand that so long as she (and
other members of the family)
give him a painless license to
drink he will do just that -
probably to his death. She can
then bp the neighborhood
heroine at his funeral.
A wife cannot stop her hus-
band's drinking, bueshe and his
employer can forte him to make
a choice between his family
and his job -or his jug.
When this is done, without
punitive or hostile emotions. in
most cases, the alcoholic will
begin his recovery. -.LS. Na-
tional Council of Alcoholism,
B.C. MO.
Dear J.S.: Since you are a
professional in the field, you
know that the experts are in
sharp disagreement, not only
on the cause of alcoholism, but
on most effective methods of
arresting it.
1 am not being critical of your
method because I'm certain it
has worked in a great many
cases,, but I'm equally certain
it won't work for all problem
drinkers. Some alcoholics, when
given., deb ,,:e.,..ehois can only:
view it as a punitive and hostile
act and turn to the bottle for
comfort, escape, and retaliation.

Scurvy
Re:qIIs From Vitamin Lack
Scurvy, a disease .ol. infants
.which , results from a lack of
Vitamin C, is surprisingly quite
common in some parts of Can-
ada.
Scurvy, which generally shows
itself at the average age of
seven to 12 months, is prevent-
able and does not occur in the
breast-fed infant.. The baby
with scurvy usually shows in-
creasing irnitabilit and severe
tt pderness of the limbs. Often
the infant will cry in great pain
when picked up and even
scream if approached ay anyone.
When suffering from the dis-
ease, the child's ,,gums become
swollen and tender and show
some bleeding into the tissues.
This causes pain and the baby
may refuse his feeding. often
crying with hunger, yet unable
to eat.
Scurvy is easily cured and eas-
ily prevented. Any vitamin sup-
plement for infants, such as or -
to that letter about names -and
what the people attached to
them are really like? Since read-
ing the adult's letter I have
made a careful study of names
and people ai'tdr-here are .the
results of my research: '
Girls named Delores, Pris-
cilla and Helen are old-fashioned
and , shy. Boys named Harley,
Oliver, Fred, Henry and Doug-
las are also old-fashioned and
shy. Girls named Donna, .Patty,
Elaine, Sue and Nancy are cute
and can have their choice of
boys. Boys who are cute and can
have their choice of girls are
Eddie, Richard, Paul and Danny.
Boys you don't know but
offer you rides in their cars
are usually named Kenny,
R°ger,,Bob and Jim. (yt u find
their names- out later). Thank
you. -Karen.
Dear Karen: Why don't you
find out FIRST and walk? -
Ann.

daily dose to prevent it.
• There will soon be tinned

Headache
Headache, in one form or an-
other, is a very cpmmon com-
plaint in any doctor's office, and
no age group is ,immune.
- While .there are several causes
of headache, a straightforward
classification would be "simple
headaches" and "serious head-
aches." The vast majority are
simple in nature, but have un-
derlying physiological and psy-
chological causes so complex
they are difficult to understand.
On the other Shand the serious
headaches, .usually simple to
identify, result from organix
disease of the brain such as
tumours and blood clots, and
require vigorous treatment. .
Migraine, the cause of nvhich
is known, is classedamong the
simple headaches. It has its
onset from early childhood to
puberty, and there is a strong
factor .of heredity.
Typically, the migraine head-
ache is -preceded. by visual and
sensory disturbances such' as
flashing lights in the eyes. It
has a slow beginning, eventuailly
reaching a throbbing or pulsat-
ing climax and is usually one-
sided -the side alfe0.ted some-
times varying from one attack
to another. The severe head-
ache 'ma'y last from hours to
days, and id 50 per cent of
cases headache is accompanied
by vomiting.
Treatment is aimed at pre-
vention of attacks although sperm
lac remedies to relieve the head-
ache are available. These rem-
edies must" be tailor-made to the
individual patient's own require..
meas. " Headache may ne a
fieult' condition to diagnose, and
if it is a continuing problem the
cause should be determined by
a physician before any 'treat-
ment is tried.
