HON. HR. BLAKE'S S U1'L'PESS-
ED LETTER.
At this particular junction, ween we
are on the eve of several bye -elections,
it may be well for our readers to bear
in mind several poiuters contained in
the famous letter of the Hon. Edward
Blake, whidit his quondam Liberal
friends suppressed, until after the last
general election. We find it published
in ex -tense in the columns of the Ent_
pi re. That Mr. Blake withdrew reluct-
antly from public life and political
warfare appears from the wording of
his letter to his former constituents of
Kest Durham.: So that his sentiments
on Unrestricted Reciprocity and An-
nexation are all the stronger, conrtuY•
as they do from the ablest lnan.in the.
Liberal party who still sympathizes
with them to much of their policy. But
o the letter. He asserts (1.) that the
policy advocated by such men as Cart
wriglit, Laurier, &c., would involve
Jtcar•y direct taxation, on Canada; (2.)
that any practicable plan of trade un-
ion with, the United States involves
d(t1i rential duties against the United
Kingdom; (3.) that no solution of theft-
aa.ncial' problem ,would leave us witli-
out a great clejicit; (4.) that any feasi
bee plait of reciprocity , would inyolve
Me sabstantial assimilation of the tar-
ijTs of both countries; (5) that unre:
,trieted reciprocity without an assimi,
ration of duties 7s an . unsubstantial
dream; (G.) thatunrestricted reciproc-
ity P z
it implies Commercial Union; (7.) that
commercial union his -elves political
amalgamation as "looking to Washing-
ton"; (8.) that as the result of "a com-
mon tariff" Canadian, Pllnrtufactures
enritled to the sympathy and support
of the electorate? Virtually, this vies-
tion has already beet answered in the
affirmative by the sweeping and in -
Creased majorities rolled up for the
Conservative candidates at the recent
elections in North Lanark and Glen- l
g lrry. It is a fact worthy of notice,
that in both cr,nstitnencies it 'wais the
'farming community that swelled the
vote. As a class our farmers are a
