like youse would do so.
One of the professiors had
started a club for the boys of
the neighborhood and rented a
shop as a meCing place. He
attended it almost every even-,
ing, dispensing advice' mixed
with sports and trying by every

good. He was one of the few
who dal ed to walk alone at
night outside the chain' fence
of the "Tech." Even so he

of the gang he so 'diligently
succoured and it was only when
they recognized him that they
laid off.
Lennie
All this reminds me of Lennie
in the days when she'- lived in
Paradise Valley in Detroit and
came to the house daily to
.cook, What . a cook and what

en frying to feed a regiment and
if you° mildly suggested there
was rather a lot, Lennie would
reply: "My Puppy sed there

chicken." .Perhaps it was cook-
ing on this ',441gantuar1 scale
which accounted for ,her 300
pounds plus.
Be that as it may, Lennie had
a very sound philosophy. She
was dusting the "books in the
library one day assisted by Bee-
att•riss (not Beertriss-•-Beatrice)
when she took out a volume
entitled "In Darkest Africa,"
dating from ppfore the days
when Dr. L.vingstope was in
flower.'"Dats us Beeattriss! Dats
wheres we due come from—
Dahkest Africa!' B. answered:
"Ah doesn't cusp from ' dahkest
Africa. Ah comes from Okla-
homa!"
Lennie didn't want integrated
schools. She possessed great
self respect and self confidence.
The only thing she did ask was
that the school,' her children
woula attend should provide a
good education, as good asanl-
one else would re?eive.
"Lennie, we're having 22 for
cocktails 'this afternoon. Will
you fiix up some of your "itty
bi'ttics" for us?" "Yes mam,
ah will. Jess youse keep out
a ma kitchen." And what mouth
watering canapes would result.
They arc almost too tantalising
to recall. Wnen the guests be-
gan to . arrive, Lennie would
open the door with: "Would
youse like to west y -oh wraps?"
Once - the party was. - in --full
swing, curiosity would get the
better of her • and she would
find some excuse for leaving
her kitchen to come in and see
what everyone was wearing.
Next day .she would ask: "What
dat Missus B.. . . What for she
so uppety?"
Lennie was a great friend bf
the Rate Charles Kettering. At
one`alrair v; Tchi'lie"' alexia
it . became very noticeable that
Lennie was following Mr. Ket-
tering lime a dog, with a plate
of lobster pates in her hand.
"Lennie!" Offer ` the pates to

doan't youse leave ma glide
wid dat lobster!" ,'
We were• sun bathing in the
back garden when. screams of
laughter greeted uS from two
'upper windows; Lennie in one
and Beeattriss in the other.
Late, when asked the reason
for all the mirth. Lennie explain-
ed: "White 'folks'` is allus tryin
to get dark and keep their hair
curly, while we colored folks is
tryin ' to make ourselves paler
and to get the frizz out of our
hair."
Paradise Valley
Sometimes we would drive
her home and since the period
included the Detroit 'race riots
of. the 1940's and as already stat-
ed, Lennie lived in Paradise
Valley, the arrival of the car
produced,. some very ugly looks
from, the; loungers on the steps
of the adjoining houses. 'Lennie
would get out, when out would
run several piccaninnies, nieces
nussl ueafseh rfdhcid -iictfd wt
and nephews," who would climb
into the car and give us a tre-
mendous welcome. Instantly the
'mien of the loungers changed
and 'broad smiles took their
places. •
As you may have gathered,
these recollections are from 15
to 20 .. years' old now. ; - Lennie
was regxttfully left behind only
because she would have been
unhappy away from her own
folks. For as few years she
•
wrote, then tier letters stopped'
and we ' lost all track .of her.
At 10' p.m. a Sunday or so
ago the phone. rang and a fam-
iliar •voice said: '"Dis Lennie!
How youse all?'" There ensued
the usual extensive questioning
as to how everyone was with
us, but when we asked for her
story, it seemed that, she had
been ~- as street accident an •
sustained a damaged leg.
How had she found us?t Whep
would she come up? And on
and en until the gap 'of time
had been almost closed. Yes,
she would be , up very soon—as
soon as her leg was better. Yes
Miss Victoria, her mother was
still alive and soon you could
almost hear again some of those
things her Pappy used to tell
her; precepts which she never
forgot and whichhad resulted
in such a warm-hearted honest
and beloved member of our
family. ,.
