Goderich Distrust Cg llegiate the club was welcomed by Prof.
Ronald, head of the biology de-
partment followingwhich, vari-
ous members of the faculty dis-
cussed career opportunities in
the biological fields and some
of the research work being car-
ried out in the building. '
IftStitu'te Biology CIO' last
field trip of the year, May 24,
was strictly for the birds, in-
cluding those black fellows with
red epaulets carrying transistor
radios. s.
The .group's tour opened at
the Niska - Water Fowl Research
Statical, a large. area of cedar
swamp, ponds and streams on
e Speed River, operated - by
the Ontario Water Fowl Re-
search Foundation.
Later they went to the Uni-
versity of Guelph where they dis-
covered the electronically -equip-
ped red -winged black birds.
W. H. Carrick, manager of
the Niska station and one of
North America's leading photo-
graphers of wild -life who has
contributed film for several of
the Walt Disney wild -life series,
introduced the group: to Dr. A.
T. Cri►igan of the department of
biology, University of .Guelph,
who devoted the morning to
showing -and explaining to the
club members the different pro-
jects in progress.
As the group toured the sta-
tion it had an opportunity to
observe and identify at close
quarters many of the wild ducks,
geese,, yarad d'ther waterfowl
8rw tp
whitclh f requelit" the Goderich
area, but ` too often are un tp.
proachable. It is hoped that this
station will eventually have a
complete collection of Canadian
water -fowl.
Many of the waterfowl were
neStirg or had young. Most are
free to come or go, but prefer
the protection and food provided
by the station.
While the prime objective of
the station is toinvestigate and
to demonstrate various methods
of water -fowl , management —
nestin8 shelters, pond construc-
tion, environment factors—a
program of a^-ademic research
is also in progress determining
the food'and space requirements
of various' species of ducks, vari-
ations in the body sizes of the
Canada goose due to climatic
faotots, the effects of inter -
species hybridization. This work
being carried on in conjunction
with various universities.
After inspecting the incuba-
tor room, brooder room, and
laboratory facilities, members
had a picnic lunch and then
boarded the bus and headed for
the cam+pus of the University
of Guelph.

Unique perhaps is the work in
marine biology, in this day and
age :,f rapid air travel the Uni-

isolation from the oceans is not
a serious handicap, various
marine animals live in an en-
