FARM MARKT ARBITERS

and thus place a rein on ar- the Li+beral MPP, farm spokes-
bitrary government interven- man for hls party .in the legis -
tion,; lature
His •proposal in the legisla-
ture resulted from the recent
controversy involving the On-
tario Bean Growers' Market-
ing ' 'Board, whose directors
were dismissed by government
order in February on the e
grounds they defied instructions
to follow'proper marketing prin-
ciples and to separate "their P
activities from their processing
subsidiary, Ontario Bean Grow-
ers Ltd.. of London.
„Following the hearing, the
government would decide
whether the judge's determin-
ation of the facts warranted a
board's dismissal and, if so,
would call for new producer
lections within 60 days.
Mr, Gaunt couched his pro-
osal in a resolution. It was
alked out in the legislature,
New Democratic Party leader
Donald MacDonald supported
the suggestion with minor
qualifications, but the only gov-
ernment supporter to speak,
Robert Welch, opposed it.
Mr. Welch suggested most
marketing boards are 'satisfied
with the, existing system of
operation and that, if a sound-
ing-boar'd is required to air df-
ferences between the faun
products marketing board and
the commodity groups, it should
take -the.-form- of -a --consultative
committee composed of chair-
men of all 18 boards.
A temporary directora, a waa
appointed by the farm products
marketing board to run bean
producers' affairs pending elec-
tion of new directors.
Elections ,are now under way
and the processing company is
being reorganized as a co-opera-
tive.
Mr. Gaunt said the appoint-
ment of judges to hold public
hearings before marketing
beax& aree dissolved would dis-
courage a repetition of the bean
hoard hostilities.
He urged total revision of
Ontario's Farm Products Mar-
keting Act, which, he said, had
become a "hodge-podge piece
of machinery" for the 18 mar-
keting boards in the province.

seat belts because they fear'
being "trapped" in a blazing

League points out •that..a_person
wearing d belt at the time of
an accident is less likely to be
knocked unconscious, and is •
therefore better able to extri-
cate himself from the vehicle.
In any case, the danger of fire
is small. A study of 33,250
injury -producing accidents show-
ed that only 148 resulted in • a
fire -less than one-half of, one
per cent. The incidence of fire
